Those uncontrolled crossings are nothing to mess around with.  I cross a couple of them going from home to some fields I farm but there's very little train traffic on this line.  That one however would have to be quite busy, I think that's BNSF's.  Channel 41 reported they had $400,000 to upgrade that crossing with arms, lights, etc.  Unfortunately it didn't happen soon enough.

My condolences to the families.

You will never see me get close to any crossing when a train goes by, no matter if there are guards in place or not. I use to work on the rail while in the Army and have seen a lot of bad things happen at crossings. I've seen boxcar doors come off and kill people, loads come loose and fall off the train, ballast or other debris on the track get kicked up and sent flying. Objects on the track will fly at extremely fast speeds when ran over by a train. Crossing and turnouts (switches) are the two biggest causes of derailments too.
