I'll be visiting Branson for a week. Arriving June 5.
Looking for some things to do to get away by myself while I'm there. I will be traveling with my wife, kids, and my in-laws. I will need a break. Also maybe some suggestions on non-tourist trap things to do with the family. Something outside of the chaos that is the main strip through Branson. Been there done that. Happy to meet up with someone for dinner or drinks. I'm also into cigars. If nobody wants to meet I would appreciate suggestions on places to go. Breweries, distilleries, cigar bars, gun stores, etc. I'll have to figure out where we are staying, I know it's a VRBO and I think it's in a country club-ish subdivision 15 or so minutes out of Branson. |
|
There's plenty of hiking and fishing down there. Rent a boat on Table Rock for the day, or go fly fishing on Lake Taneycomo.
|
|
Your lucky if you get time away on your own. We've been going since our oldest was two and that never happens. Lol
They are on the strip but have you been to the military museum or car museum? I hear College of the Ozarks has a nice gun museum. Big D's BBQ is fantastic. It is on the red bypass route. When you are on the landing with your family, Landshark is a pretty good place to eat and they have a great coupon. $10 off of $30. https://couponbranson.com/branson-restaurants/landshark-bar-grill/ |
|
Copper run distillery has a great bar located north of Branson a few miles.
|
|
|
There is a decent little gun shop there in town just south of the 4 way stop light by the titanic. There is also the gun club north of town off 65. I think they are mostly shotgun (Trap and skeet). There is an indoor range in Springfield that is about 30 min north. Never been there but there are also some gun shops there as well.
Check out Branson West. It may be closer to where you are staying for grocers and what not. The restaurants there are just as good and way less crowded. Take a look at Top of the Rock and Dogwood Canyon for touristy outdoor stuff to do. |
|
|
Thanks for the recommendations I'll look these places up
What's the mask situation like? Indoors, outdoors, at restaurants, etc? |

I'd probably consider going on a guided trout fishing trip on taneycomo if you're into that.

What kind of vehicle you driving?
Lots of fun 4wd trails off of Glade Top Trail a bit north (30-40minutes) of Branson. I have a lot of fee time. Enjoying early retirement or unemployment depending on how you look at it. |

For family stuff to do in Branson; Make sure you take the family to The Stampede show. It is the best show in Branson and the whole family will like it. Also Rick Thomas and Reza are both really good illusionist/magic shows that the whole family will like. |
|
For trout fishing start at Lilleys Landing as a bunch of different guides work out of their Marina. Make sure to go check out the state record brown mounts in the fly shop there. You'll get to truly see the size and scope of the sea monsters that are in Taneycomo.
Duane Doty of Ozarktroutrunners.com is a phenomenal guide and just a great person to boot. He may be booked out already though. Babler is also a fantastic guide on both Taney for trout and Table Rock for bass. He also currently holds the state record brown title from a year or so ago. 40lber. A bunch of other great guides there at Lilleys though that they can set you up with. You wont be disappointed. |
|
I have never fly fished before so I'm thinking about fly fishing trout. It's my understanding Taneycomo has some of the best trout fishing anywhere.

If you have never been there Homer Simson says it best "it's like Vegas if it were run by Ned Flanders"
This place is a 30 min drive from Branson, but it is great and been on many of the food TV shows. You should take the family there. I would take my kids there and my parents liked it as well. https://throwedrolls.com/lamberts-cafe-ii/ This is a few hours away, but there are two conservation areas that have released elk and they have driving tours to look at elk. It was a big deal when they first brought them in to reintroduce them https://mdc.mo.gov/discover-nature/activities/driving-tours/elk-driving-tours |

View Quote You'll be hard pressed to find a better tail water fishery. Lilleys also rents fly rod and equipment. Tell Blake JestersHK sent ya and he'll take care of you. You'll have just as much success with a light spinning rod outfit too if you don't have the time to spend learning a fly rod. I'll be down there this weekend fishing a charity tournament out of Lilleys. I'll check my schedule for that weekend, and if I can swing it I'll come down and show ya the ropes if you can't get a guide. Unlike them, I only give a one fish guarantee |
|
Been to Lambert's before. We have a Hurtz where I live. Trying not to be fat, we don't go there often . Thanks for the recommendations
Yeah I'd love to meet up with some of y'all! Fish, eat a meal, have a drink, whatever. Is it hard to fly fish? Not worth trying to learn on a 4 hour trip? Don't want to be out all day. Wouldn't mind trying at some point but also recognize there's a learning curve. |
|
Pick up a cheap starter kit from Amazon and try it out if you have a pond by ya. It's easy to pick up harder to master... I would not want to waste guide time learning. You want to be catching and learning techniques to use from them.
The maximum catch brand on amazon are decent for the money but they are China so theres that... hard to find cheap fly rod kits that don't come from there... |

We may also have the pedal tour going by the time you are around. Could hit the downtown Spfd breweries in a two hour tour. Although we are currently in the third month of trying to get our license from the city. Very business friendly. |

Attached File Also saw some extended family today and went to the aquarium at Bass Pro Shops. Wow that was a great aquarium. Expensive but really enjoyed it. The BPS also had a great collection of guns on display in a museum type room. Very cool. Thanks for the suggestions I think we'll end up doing the golf cart thing someday too |

I'm leading a trail ride on Glade Top Tuesday (tomorrow) at 10am. We have myself and 2 other vehicles currently.

We're meeting at the main entrance at Hwy 125 and Glade Top Trail Road. https://tinyurl.com/536j85cu Depending on how many kids you have, you're welcome to ride along. I can comfortably fit 3 adults in my 4Runner or 4, if someone wants to sit in the middle seat in the back. I'm sure one of the other Jeeps in our group could take a passenger or 2 as well. Trail ride pics from Memorial Day Weekend. Attached File Attached File Attached File 4x4 is recommended. Expect some pinstripes (they buff out). Full size trucks will fit but expect to take some 3 point turns and hit every hard obstacle. Attached File Attached File Attached File |

Probably be out all day, always a good idea to bring a lunch, snacks for the kids, water / beer. I grab something at the local gas station plus have a cooler with bottled water and a couple beers. I'm not a big drinker, but a beer tastes good midway through. My plan - subject to change is to visit the swimming hole / waterfall 1st. That trail leads to a huge mud hole that will sink my 4Runner. We'll probably go back the way we came. Then hit 2 to 3 more trails. All are rocky, muddy, with a couple shallow water crossings. Buddy of mine does everything but the real muddy parts in a 2003 2wd Nissan Frontier. He has a limited slip rear locker. Attached File |

@drobs
I've been looking for some more people to hit a trail down by Cassville with. I have a couple buddies that want to do it, but we're having trouble getting a schedule that works for everyone. If you're ever free we'd welcome another. It's a little more rough/technical than Gladetop (from what I hear). Some good rock steps, etc. FR1011 is one of the ones I hit. |

I'm booked this Saturday June 12th, with a trail ride, but am free Sunday. Then I have my niece's HS grad party in Michigan, the weekend of June 19th. Other than those 2 events I'm free. There's always someone that wants me hit the trails with them. So if you can lock down a tentative date / weekend, that would be best. I'm enjoying early retirement and am free during the week. FR1011 looks like a good long trail. In regards to Glade Top - FR912 (Clayton Ridge) is probably the most technical / fun trail there. |

There's several trails in that area. My buddy that's a SGF officer is the one I'm having trouble with. Their schedule is kinda screwy.
