You could drop it off at Goodwill.  They love working outdated televisions there.

I just set them on the curb, someone always liberates them before the trashman gets there.

They'll charge you $50 if you try to recycle a CRT.

This.

I also tape a sign to them, saying FREE and stating whether they work.

I've taken a few TVs into Best Buy to recycle. They charge a few bucks, but then give you the same amount in a gift card. There's always something I can pick up there.

Goodwill & curb, both good ideas.

A couple years ago I put an old mower at the curb. It still worked but had very little power, probably down form the original 3hp to about 1hp. . I got it free, so, worth every penny! But it had a couple issues. It was so light weight (magnesium deck, ask me how I know ) that you had to step on top of it while cranking, and it would only run off the top half of the gas tank as the lower pickup wasn't picking up.

A few hours later a kid from up the block ran to it, looked around as if to see if anyone was watching and made off with it like a bandit.  Good, it was gone.  Later that evening I looked out to see him sneaking it back to the end of my driveway. RATS!  it came back.

Then I put a sign on it saying "Works, here's how..." and it was gone within an hour to a brother in a Cavalier.

Your town might take them...I think mine does it yearly...free drop off.  Call them and ask if they are doing it or know of a place that will take it for free.

Cleaning up the glass after you shoot them is PITA. Still finding glass in my backyard 2 years later.

I put a weight bench out on the curb. Was gone the same day.
Thinking I'll bump into it at one of these permanent garage sales they have around here.
