My ex-wife had issues with back pain. Went to many doc appoints with her and she had many epidural shots into her back. Wish I could remember the doc that did it. That was 10 or so years ago.....

My dad used a doc Wilson that has offices in Birmingham, Anniston and I think Gadsden. I think that he primarily works out of St Vincent's but not totally sure about that. He helped my dad but your results may vary.

I’ve had a decent experience with OrthoAlabama in Hoover and Trussville. Gullung would be the doctor you’re looking for.

I know Dr. Mark Hadley and Dr. Steven Theiss at UAB personally and have several friends that have used them for neck and back problems. Both are excellent and have great staffs.
I used to work at St. Vincents hospital and worked with the Neurospine docs a bunch. Great group of surgeons and good people and they coordinate well with whatever PT group you end up with. You can't go wrong with the following: Samuel R. Bowen, II, MD; Charles Clark, III, MD; Benjamin Banks Fulmer, MD; William C. Woodall, III, MD; Carter S. Harsh, MD I have also worked with Dr. Andrew M. Cordover, at Andrews Sports Medicine and he is a really good surgeon as well. |

I owe him because he saved my wife from having a painful surgery that she did not need! IMHO, i went to a new doctor at the St. Vincent's Neurospine Center and I wasn't impressed. My sister and I have both gone to Dr. Robert Robinson in Birmingham, and we both really like him. For the past 8 years I had been dealing with an issue that multiple doctors said was either in my shoulder or in my neck. Dr. Robinson was able to correctly diagnose that it wasn't my neck and put me on the path to getting relief. The folks who work for him are also great as well! |

There is a Husband and Wife operation out of Sheffield that are AWESOME. Pace Family Chiropractic has been my go-to. Ask him to see "Cecil" if you go!

I'm more on the Ortho side of the house. I'm not going to say more here for doxx reasons. All of those are excellent recommendations. |

I don't know if this is timely for you or not but Dr. Parker at The Orthopedic center has done several back surgeries for my wife with degenerative disk disease. He's excellent BUT as of late unless you're post surgical don't count on getting any pain meds prescribed.

He is a Neurosurgeon and one of the best in the business. He did two laminectomies and a fusion for me. I have been pain free for about tens years now since the fusion. I wouldn't have any other doctor work on my back. He has done work on several of my friends and my wife as well. I have never regretted any of the five back surgeries that I have had. Good luck. |

My biggest concern would be that I’m going to be unable to workout and wrestle in masters level competitions.

The ex went under the knife of three spine docs and four surgeries on her cervical spine. Years on a pain contract. The last she saw helped her the most. The guy took away about 70% of her pain away with his last revision. . It helped so much she was able to rehab off the opiates and just deal with what was left. That was a godsend if you know how shabbily chronic pain folks are treated.
The guy is a local at the Andrews Sport Med clinic at St Vincent's in Birmingham. His name is Dr Andrew Cordover. I will sing his praises from now on. I know any neurodoc will tell you they don't do surgery to take away pain, the do it to prevent more damage. That guy's last work on her took away pain. I wish you well, Coach. |

I just got an artificial disc put in on Monday. The numbness and tingling completely gone. I hope whatever you decide to get done helps because I know that feeling.

Since I’ve slowed down in coaching, I finally have seen an ortho at the Andrew’s group, the non-surgical spinal specialist. Dr. Carnel seems to know his stuff, hopefully as good as Dr. McGill.
My nerve pain was getting worse, I was only able to walk about 100 yards before the pain would start. Part of that is my fault, I completely went off my diet and exercise program. I had an epidural this morning, I was one of the 40% of people who had a case of the numb and weak legs after waking up. That meant I couldn’t leave until I wasn’t wobbly, 2.5 hours after getting wheeled into recovery. I’ll be starting therapy next week, I’ve got a contact that said a certain PT in the metro area is good with spines. |

Dr. Hadley @ UAB is my guy and helped me out tremendously with my neck and back a few years ago. I like the fact that he is a no nonsense straight to the point kind of doctor. Some appreciate that, but a family friend didn’t like the fact that he basically told her she was too big/fat to go under the knife and would need to make some serious life changes if she wanted real help. He wasn’t wrong in his assessment. |
