John I lived in St. Tammany parish for the past 36 years It's great. Good schools, low crime, good fishing and hunting, vehicle carry loaded long guns or hand guns is ok,state wide ccw, outdoor range 10 minuites north of Slidell (I'm a range officer there) (http://www.honeyisland.org/) $6.00 all day, full auto is ok, the weather is hot and humid, close to the Mississippi gulf coast nise beaches and casinos if you don't want to go in to the city of New Orleans If you need any more info let me know. |

Like Ram said. Good place. SLidell is not very far from N.O. without the major jungle problems. I am in Baton Rouge, 80 miles to the East, more of a college town with industry over here. A few decent places to shoot and quite a few nice Gun stores in the area. The gun culture is a way of life and a standard in southern Louisiana not a privialege(sp?) like other places. |

Be sure you are armed if you go to N.O. Lived there 2 years and robbed twice in nice area of town. Cousin and good friend's brother was robbed during same time peroid.

Thanks for the good news, I hope things work out and I end up down there. I'm really sick of the cold and looking forward to the heat. If I do end up there I'll be sure to look you guys up.

Also, open carry is legal (not restiricted in statute, born out in case law,) but not common knowledge in big cities.
Not common knowledge by many city LEOs, either, so do it only if you must would be my suggestion if ya come down here. |

A further note on NFA weapons:
You must register them with LSP, and can only own a weapon which was used in a military conflict in which the US took part. Which sounds pretty restrictive, but the practical interpretation by LSP is that it need only the TYPE of weapon which was used in said conflict, not the actual weapon itself. And it doesn't specify used by the US, either, so pretty much any NFA weapon is good to go. i.e., FALs were used by allied troops in Gulf War 1, so they're good, AKs were used by opposing forces in nearly every US military action, so they're good, etc. |

Yet another note:
As a perfect example of our regard for idiotic laws: Possesion of any knife which may be easily opened with one hand is theoretically illegal except for dealers and LEOs who are on duty. But they're sold everywhere, and carried by boatloads of people. No one cares. |

That brings up a question of mine. I'm considering building a short barrel ar15 after the ban, do these need to be registered with LSP? The rule about the guns having to be used in a conflict the US was involved in seems kinda silly. Who can name a NFA firearm not used by US/Allies/Enemy states during a conflict? I'm sure theres a few but I can't think of any that are on my shopping list for when I can afford one

All NFA items are fine except with the registration with the state police, which as I said I'm not clear on registering with them other than machine guns.
No limits on how much you can own. I remember that our old governer Edwin Edwards signed either the mandate for background checks on gun purchases, or it may have been the state ccw law (I can't remember which). As a fitting photo op he did it at his residence in his room housing his gun collection. He had ALOT of pistols on the wall  As far as gun culture in general here, my friend was pulled over with me and him enroute to his grandfathers land to shoot. The deputy asked if we had any weapons, and after going through them all he asked if he could come join us . We had a blast, so did the deputy, got my friend out of a speeding ticket too

SBRs and SBSs must be registered with LSP, as must suppressors.
No limit on number of weapons. No registration of non-NFA weapons outside of New Orleans, but it isn't actually done there either. The NOPD section responsible for registering weapons in Orleans Parish DOESN'T EVEN EXIST. On the down side, the current governor and a couple left-wing cronies did try to pass a state AWB this year, along with a tax on all handguns to be paid yearly, but thankfully both measures failed. On a bad note, the governor did force through the re-application of helmet laws for MCs a couple weeks ago, so things might get dicey next year. (Side note: I recommend wearing a helmet, but it should be your choice.) |

Another reason why if you come here you shouldnt go to new orleans unless you must, I'm sure its not the police departments stance against gun registration more than their incompetence. If you must visit during mardi gras, stay sober, plenty of people that wouldnt mind stuffing some drunk guy in a car and dumping him or his corpse off in N.O. East. Last time I went there on business I was jumped in broad daylight by 5 guys on Canal street, and I consider myself pretty aware of my surroundings. Luckily they didn't find my .45 on me. For big business types traveling there on business it wouldnt be too outragous to have a Blackwater or the like V.I.P. protection unit escort you through town. It's THAT bad. Small tactical nuke from orbit seems to be the only way to fix that city now

Bah---it ain't THAT bad.
I live here, and the stories are a trifle exagerrated. Heck--our lack of a firearms registration section is a mix of anti-anti-gun laws and ignorance, not just incompetence. Heck, in the entire state of LA it is illegal for anyone not a dealer or an on-duty LEO to posses a knife which can be "easily opened with one hand," yet they are sold and carried everywhere. We just ignore stupid laws, for the most part. You want over-zealous law enforcement, visit Kenner--those twerps probably started writing helmet tickets at 12:01 Sunday morning. |

Yea I am exaggerating to an extent, but by god if I was bill gates I'd roll through mid city in an armored convoy
If you like living in that warzone, to each his own. I'd say the massive influx of people moving up here to the northshore wouldn't agree though .BTW how many police officers have been murdered there in the past few weeks? 1 I know of, 3 I believe? Up here a murder is still big news. |

I agree... Slidell is a great place to live. I grew up here, moved away, and came back and bought a house after I got married. The Honey Island range is a very fun place to shoot (was there this past Sunday... beautiful day). Also, Slidell will be getting an indoor pistol range soon (they're putting the finishing touches on it now). --Mike

Not three. Mark was shot, and will recover in time. George was hit by a sleeping truck driver. Latoya was shot and killed. Alva was murdered, but the act that killed him took place in 1985, and he passed away from the coma he was in for 19 years. |

Good for you. My best friend was stabbed on Canal St in daylight in 99. Bad for him. Crime statistics for the last god knows how many years tell me I'm more likely to die from a violent crime in New Orleans than up here. I think I'll stay here. It doesn't have much to do with being scared as opposed to the difference in quality of life up here .

Hi, I just moved here from Illinois and I love it here. I,m about 10 miles north of Covington near Barker's Corner. I plan on getting to the Honey Island range as soon as I get settled in good. My wife is from here but I also was getting tired of the snow and cold weather. If you don't mind a little heat and humidity I think you will also like it here.

Hey hopefully neighbors,
I was down this weekend, the weather is sooooo nice ,95. I have a new question for you. I naturally went to the gun show. While I was strolling down an isle a man at a table caught my attention. He had a sign that said "private sale ,no paperwork". Please tell me more. This is very similar to the way NH is but I have never seen it at a gun show. Pinch me, beautiful weather and similar gun laws, I must be dreaming.

Nothing unusual at a show, but I must add that at Slidell's show, and at the one in Kenner, those tables usually have crappy deals.
Better to wander and check out what other folk have brought in to sell. (Or lurk by the entrance.) |
