WHAT IS THE ALABAMA STATE DEFENSE FORCE?

The all volunteer Alabama State Defense Force was created by state law to assume state military missions in the event the Alabama National Guard is ordered to federal active duty in each National Guard Armory with membership composed of patriotic local citizens both with and without prior military experience

What Does The Alabama State Defense Force Do? The AL SDF units provide a variety of services to their communities. During local emergencies and community events, State Defense Force members assist with traffic control, search and rescue, shelter management, and other vital duties. The Alabama State Defense Force also supports the National Guard in serious disasters such as hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes. The AL SDF is also an active and important part of Alabama’s Homeland Security in the fight against terrorism

WHO CAN JOIN THE ALABAMA STATE DEFENSE FORCE? Membership in the AL SDF is open to any U.S. citizen, male or female, who at the time of enlistment, is not a current member of an active or reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces including the Army and Air National Guard. Prospective members must be of good moral character and should be in good health, but physical disabilities are not necessarily a barrier to service in some capacity. Prior military experience is not a requirement though service men and women, including military retirees, are actively sought
