GOSHEN -- Fearing an immigration reform proposal that could make being here illegally a felony, 2,000 local Hispanics are expected at a downtown rally Saturday.

The group will march from Linway Plaza -- site of the license branch -- to the Elkhart County Courthouse.

They're protesting a U.S. House bill that would enact stricter penalties for illegal immigrants. Instead, they support a Senate bill that would start a guest-worker program and make it easier for people to get visas.

The rally is also to push for driver's licenses for illegal immigrants. Organizers already have 3,000 names on a petition in favor of that.

"We want people to know we're here," said Eric Carrillo, one of the organizers. "It's not just in the big cities; it's in the small cities and towns too."

The rally is organized by Goshen Spanish-language station Radio Kañon and Organizacion por los Derechos Civiles y Laborales (Organization for Civil and Labor Rights).

Organizers are taking steps to quell the controversy that has accompanied larger rallies in other countries -- protesters will be given U.S. flags and not allowed to wave other flags. Also, they're asked to wear white shirts with no slogans. yeah right

Goshen officials gave them permission to use the sidewalks along Lincoln Avenue for the rally. Organizers haven't sought county permission to use the courthouse lawn; if they don't get it, they'll stay on the sidewalks around the courthouse.

Mayor Allan Kauffman told organizers he supports the driver's license proposal, but cautioned them to watch what else is said for fear of stirring up more conflict.

"A lot of people interpret these kind of rallies as demanding these rights and privileges," he said.

Flor Garcia of Radio Kañon said the purpose is to show the community and lawmakers how many Hispanics are here, not to start a fight.

"We are here, we are in your territory. ... We cannot demand," she said.

She expects about 2,000 people to attend, though it's been highly publicized by Hispanic media, so there could be more. Police are planning to help escort the rally.

Garcia said it's not just for Hispanics. "Anglo people, they are more than welcome to come too if they are in favor," she said.

Does anyone have a few box vans we could put INS on the side and park them at the DMV before the rally.

I thought the new “PC” term was guest workers or undocumented?

Maybe they should issue hunting permits!!
Or at least send the felons home.

Don't take no genius to figure that one out.
Just go to the Wally World or the Post Office.
Heck, they should rename the town of Ligonier to something like "New Tijuana" or maybe "North Chihuahua".
It is really bad when people who are not citizens have more rights than the people who are citizens.

I was just listening to a local news/talk radio station local news broadcast and they mentioned the rally in Goshen.
Get this: Police are more concerned about the people who are coming out to protest the people in the rally than they are for the actual people in the rally.
They announced that they plan on being out in force to protect the rallyers.

Just goes to prove my statement from above.
We are witnessing history in the making these days.

It might be hard to find a Mexican restaurant open within 50 miles during the march
