Hello all.  I'm hopefully going to move back to MN in 2007 to go back to school (Anoka Hennepin Technical College) and finally get a college degree so I can have a more fulfilling life on my own.  You can get further in a career and have more career options with a degree than without, no?.  So anyway, I would like to move to Anoka County (maybe even the city of Anoka because that's where the college is located) so I wouldn't have a real long way to go to get to school.  Are there any bad parts of the county I should avoid?  Even though I lived in Columbia Heights, MN for 8 years (not all at once), the most ghetto area I ever went into would have been the area around Powderhorn Park in Minneapolis and that was in the 2000 to 2002 timeframe, it could be much different now. Thanks.

Anoka, the city of, is pretty nice these days. I see no real crime there, or "ghetto" to speak of. Small pockets of white trash (no offense to my own kind ) perhaps. The area around the college there is developing very quickly. Lot s of new townhomes, offices, shops, etc. Same to be said for the rest of Anoka county.

PS...I got beef with ATC......Made a half dozen trips to the college to get signed up for a class. Paid fees, sat through indoc, show up first day....no class. "Nobody told you it was cancelled...?, I'm sorry."...

ETA....Living in the city of Anoka would put you within 15 minutes of atleast a half dozen places that sell guns and boollets.

Anoka is  ok, I live in Anoka
Ramsey is ok
There are some parts of western Coon Rapids that are ok
I would say there are parts of Blaine that are really nice, but there are parts of Blaine that are

Fridley and Columbia Hieghts, are not what they were 25 years ago, Be warned

If you are going to the Tech, you should consider staying in the Western part of Anoka County,

Highway 10 is seriously in need of some major reconstruction..........The traffic in the morning can be a real bitch

That's very interesting about Columbia Heights and Fridley.  I lived in CH twice, once from approximately 1990 to 1995 and then again from March of 2000 to January of 2003 all in the same house actually.  The second time living in CH was the timeframe I attended AHTC.  I lived with in approximately 2 blocks of the CH/Fridley line and worked at the Fridley Target for a short time.  I agree with you about Highway 10.

When I was there I did have an experience like that once or twice.  The teacher who taught the legal programs (I was going for the Litigation Specialist degree) was looking after her mother who was in poor health, so I would arrive at classes to find them cancelled with no warning.  I don't know if this is the same problem you had with them though, but I understand your feelings, and can sympathize.  Hopefully they've improved their communication.  One of the reasons I didn't complete the degree, other than having to move to MA, was because I had 3 classes to go to complete my degree and the sole teacher for those 3 classes had to quit teaching because she became ill with a life threatening disease.  They were all legal classes (Legal Transcription 1&2 and Legal Keyboarding).  The classes ended up not being cancelled but ended up being taught by students sometimes, subs other times, and we decided that it was in my best interest not to try to attend classes under those conditions.

That's a pity.  When the Target up here went to check my employment, Fridley Target didn't know I existed, Target up here told me that Fridley was under new management, this was 6 months ago.

They are replacing the old Target with a Super Target due to open in fall 06.

I am in Fridley and I love it having moved from sw Mpls, for what its worth crime is FAR less here then it was there. Go figure.

Minneapolis is still a dump, and its spreading like a malignant cancer.

East of 169, North of Cty Rd 9. Only place around with a guard tower, razor wire, and a half dozen underfed attack dogs...

Been here a few years, and I dig the place.

Is that south of downtown Princeton on the Sherburn county side?  I'm having a hard time visualizing where Mille Lacs county road 9 is.

Yep, that would be south of Princeton. Cty Rd 9 is the first overpass north of Zimmerman.

Thats the only county road 9 I could think of near Princeton.  Thats the overpass that they just built a few years ago, and ever since they feel the need to shut part of it down at times for other various construction.

Some days I miss driving that way to work.  I just don't miss where I was driving to.

I grew up in North Minneapolis, about a block up from Broadway.  After I moved out of Minneapolis I continued to work there, right on Broadway for another 5 years or so.

Theres nothing like being at work and having prostitutes climbing in the window's and drug deals going down in the KFC parking lot next door.  Hell, one day a thug was shooting right out back of the building and cut through the parking lot went out onto Broadway and started shooting again.  He managed to take out one of my co-workers back windows on the street because we had no employee parking lot.  We have had people throw firecrackers into the windows at night when the windows were open.  I wasn't there for that but I can imagine the fact that some one would actually start shooting into an open window, so a firecracker going off would be a little scary.   Someone climbed in one night and stole a female workers purse.  A couple of times when the company was shut down for a vacation people have tried to pry the large garage door openand get in.  When my wife and I carpooled she used to wait for me in the delivery lot.  She started showing up late because she got sick of crackheads begging her for money or rides and was afriad that a drug deal would go bad in the lot next door and people would start shooting.

I have much respect for law enforcement, but it almost seemed like we were picked on being the minority in the area.  When we had problems the cops would never show up unless we said we were going to take actions into our own hands.  Then they would show up wanting to throw us in jail.  Gansters would be shooting at eachother outside and no one would show up.  But one night me my brother and a freind were taking out some agression on my peice of crap car that had died, and I swear they sent the whole 4th precinct out.  They rolled up right as we were pushing the smashed up car out of the garage and onto the street.  They started looking over the car with a fine tooth comb like it was stolen, treating us like criminals.  We were going to have the car towed the next day but oh no.  The police decided they wanted to impound it, then gave my mom a ticket fo an unsecured ignition or something like that.  I was so pissed off it was unbelievable.  My parents, unlike everyone else in the nieghborHOOD, had to work for a living so she had to pay the ticket rather than fight it, since what i feel they did was illegal anyways.

I moved up here into Mille Lacs county to where some of my family already resides and where most of them grew up.  The Sheriff, Deputies, and every one else has been incredible to us.

I do realize that there are a few decent areas left in MPLS.  But I think you can understand why am bitter about it.  That city has not been good to me.

I could go on and on and on, but I already feel like I'm wondering off topic.

I understand your story, just saying that there are a TON of other neighborhoods in Mpls that are NOT like that.  You know it as well.  To paint my whole city with such a broad brush is just not fair.  I'm in Linden Hills, BTW, but used to live in Whittier and Stevens neighborhood.

Also, bad shit can happen anywhere as you know.  You are more likely to run into a Meth head in Lakeville than in Minneapolis...

No flame intended, just want to get my point across.

You are more likely to run into a meth head up here than in lakeville.    We don't have a big billboard that says, "Got meth?  Sherrifs got room!"  for nothing!
