Murder charges filed in stabbing death

A 22-year-old Rochester man stabbed his father 23 times with a bayonet that was found sticking out of the victim's head Saturday evening, according to the Olmsted County attorney and a criminal complaint filed this morning.

Matthew Mark Prow was charged with two counts of second-degree murder in a criminal compliant in connection with the death of his father, Mark Anthony Prow, 52, of Rochester, said County Attorney Ray Schmitz.

The son was to be arraigned in Olmsted District Court this morning, Schmitz said.

The first count alleges he intentionally caused the death of his father. The second alleges he caused the death while committing a felony assault, the complaint says. Police were called to the Prow home at 1348 20th Street N.W. about 7:30 p.m. Saturday after law enforcement got a call from Matthew Prow's mother, Tracy Prow, who lives in the Twin Cities area. The complaint says her son told her he had killed his father.

According to the complaint, Sgt. Shawn McCarron was first to arrive at the home. He looked through a patio window into the kitchen/dining room area and saw the elder Prow lying in a pool of blood with a bayonet sticking out of the back of his head. Police Capt. Brian Winters said there were indications of a struggle at the home.

In all, authorities said Mark Prow had 23 stab wounds to his neck, back and head. He died from a loss of blood, the complaint says. Matthew Prow was arrested by Dakota County authorities Sunday morning while driving north on U.S. 52 near the town of Coates. The complaint said he later told police investigators that he deliberately and intentionally stabbed his father.

Schmitz said he is considering convening a grand jury to consider returning a first-degree murder indictment, which is necessary to prosecute premeditated first-degree murder. That carries a mandatory life prison term, if convicted. Schmitz said he will make a decision within a couple weeks.

Neighbors said the father and son lived together at the address about a month. The home is listed as being owned by Matthew Prow's grandmother, and Mark Prow's mother, Marie Brasch.

Nope, wasn't me. Love my family too much to bring any harm to them. Happened a few houses down from someone I know though.
