OK, I'll admit, I want to build an AK! That being said, is there any interest in getting a few of us together some Saturday to build AKs from receivers and parts kits? Looks like a receiver can be had for less than a hondo, as can a Romanian parts kit...
Maybe have it at some place like Bills, so we can "proof" our work? Just throwing it out there... Pat |
I'm in on something like that. We'll need to do it at a Machine Shop, though. It's not like putting an AR together. Much more drilling, etc.
The main tool you need when building an AK is a BFH.
We tested this over the weekend. It works. |
You saying I can put an AK together for a couple hundred bones? If so, I'd be in.
The parts are even available in the EE!
For example: Likemopar (here in Minnesota) sells receivers for $89 www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=7&f=122&t=292226 Kits with most of the other parts ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=7&f=123&t=303488 $90 Required rivets - $7 or $8, depending upon if you want a folder www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=7&f=123&t=295511 Comes to just shy of 2 bills... |
Me too, but I would need time to buy all the parts because I have none I just feel I need one. |
Would you plan on having a tool to install the rivets if this were to be set up? To me, installing the rivets is one of the more challenging parts which is why am choosing to machine screw mine together. Well installing the barrel back into the front trunnion isn't very fun either but is do-able. (Many thanks again to Death451 for helping me with that project. Even though its aviodable. Maybe we can use saftey glasses next time! ) I am pondering building a fixed stock AK in the future as well and if there was an easier way to install the rivets I would be for that. My Yugo Underfolder project might be done soon after some hot bluing and when I get the compliance parts I need.

Ditto. I don't have any AKs, and really NEED another evil rifle for my collection. If I could get into that setup for a couple hundred and learn how to put one together in the same step, I'm in like Flynn!
I too would be interested, but would need time to get all of the parts together!

It would be cool to add an AK to my collection! I'd be up for something like this, I just have no idea where to start.

I'm interested. I have a 18" bolt cutter that I'm converting to a rivet tool. My flat bending jig should be done in a couple weeks. I should have a 12 ton shop press by next week too. I still need to order a spot welder for the rails.

There is also this thread. www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=8&f=28&t=216759
if anyone wants to go to Pipestone. I'd like to. |
I, too would need a bit of time/money/assistance to put one together...which is why I thought about a group build! SOMEONE must know how to do it!
Anyway - lets (the collective lets) start beating the bushes for someplace we could put these together. I have a few folks in mind that may have the tools and the room... Sounds like Eli has nearly everything...and I can bring a MIG welder and gas... Timeframe thoughts from everyone? |
I got that covered too It would be at least a month until I would be able to do anything |
I would like to get into an AK sooner rather then later, but I would need some help in exactly what to buy because I have zero knowlage on them. And I am not what you would call "A Tool Master" because I don't know much on using bending presses and other big stuff, so help with that would be fricken sweat!
I am game for a weekend in Jan or Feb depending on where the shop is that we would use. (IE Pipestone is not out of the question but I would rather drive there in the summer just because of bad snowy weather I could be SOL getting there or home from there ) |
I'd be in for a build. I'm one of those who would need to lean on the expertise of others, as I have the mechanical ability of a rock...or a BFH.
Heck, I'd be happy to just be able to change the barrel on my SAR-1. I've done metalwork in the past, but I have few tools to do that with.
I would be interested in an AK build. Have BFH will travel!!!
Where to get the parts? How much for the full gun? |
I think it would be good to have 2 or 3 of these AK builds within the next year...
WHY? For the following reasons: 1.) Not quite everyone who wants one to build their own AK will be able to attend (Due to either $$ or time/date problems). 2.) Once you guys post pics and discussions HERE regarding your own rifle builds from the 1st AK build (hopefully there will be more follow ups), it may convince MANY OTHERS who will want to give it a try; ESPECIALLY considering the low $$ needed. 3.) Those who HAVE made AKs on the 1st event would likely find things they'd like to either do differently (or learn from a mistake made), or they may just want to make ANOTHER AK for the same low $$... That's why I think this would be a good thing for our local board to do on a bi-annual basis. "The Hometown AK Bi-Annual Build!" Only $200 Per AK? Who wouldn't want to build/buy more? What do you guys think? |
I would like to have more then one, as long as I can find some more Wolf ammo around here |
interested- in buying one anyway!!!!! christ, what do you need a welder for??!?!?!!?
For $200 each, I can finally realize my dream of having an AK in the trunk, in the wife's trunk, in the guest bathroom, in the pantry, under the couch...
It'd be nice to build several, but I'm thinking realistically I'll only be able to make 1 (or maybe 2). I think I'll likely have to finish building my AR first... However, a cheap AK with a folder (for in the car) would be a lovely addition to my collection! |
Seems like we have some interest! As I currently have more time off than I would like, I will start contacting various EE vendors and checking on the possibilities of a group buy for the parts.
IM or e-mail me by January 1 so I can get a count. Let me know how many AKs you wou would be interested in putting together. No money needed now, this will still be in the negotiation phase. We still need to figure out the where/when part... |
A group buy on parts sounds like a great idea. I would definately be in on that. And I might have my yugo done by the time anyone is able to do anything, so I might even be of some help!
I just stopped in at Oak Grove Arms - they have complete receivers for $99.99 - no cutting, no welding, nothing but a little dremel work on the parts kits and new rivets. They also suggested machine screws would work as well, which makes things even easier!
AFAIK, everyone involved in the build will need to fill out the appropriate ATFE paperwork to get a 100% receiver. For those of you a little more daring, it seems like you can build a receiver and never have anyone know, as long as no NFA laws are broken. |

They also suggested machine screws would work as well, which makes things even easier! /quote] Wonder where they got that idea? I'm sure people have been doing it for years. I think I found that 10-24 or 10-32 screws work perfect. The holes on the trunnion's are pretty close to size so all you have to do is run the tap through. You will want to use a good tap though or make sure you have a few on hand. I think I wrecked a couple because of the heat treating on the trunnions. I wound up using a couple of taps as starters that were a little beat up. Then moved to a nice sharp tap to clean the threads up nice. As long as you don't break the tap though, your good to go. |
I'd like to get in on this too, but I'm currently in the middle of another Jeep build up. It's taking all my extra time and money.
Maybe if you end up doing a second or third build I can get in on it then? |
I give full credit to you. |
Are you talking about just the usual ATFE paperwork (i.e. 4473 and NICS check) or something else? If a whole receiver is $100, how much would the rest of the parts cost? |
Check the receiver to find out what type it is. I know they had some yugo receivers and these are for yugo kits with the rpk type trunions. If you are going to buy the romanian kits, you need an AKM type receiver.

I'd be in for a build and/or group buy.
Was thinking of doing a couple on my own anyways. |
what kind of Receivers does oak grove have? mopar had OOW (i think OOW) rec. at like 60-70 each, just wanna know the difference?
Craig i may be in for 1. underfolder for me though. |
My spot welder showed up today and I purchased the steel needed for my bending jig yesterday. The machinist thats making it for me is off for a week though.
I have a complete receiver that a purchased 4 years ago through joeken, it's a hesse ( I didnt know that when I ordered it) and I'm somewhat nervous to build on it. I'll probably use it anyway, it can't be worse than a homebent flat |
I want in I can bring a Nice wire feeder and a speed glass Torches for heating ect band Saw Lots OF BFH,s A small 6 ton press Lots of drill bits cordless drills I hope i can get in on this build as i have always wanted an AK Or a RPK.
What is the Newest Update on a group buy???? |
Group buy update
There is no update. Some e-mails have been sent out, but, as its the Christmas season, I don't expect an answer until next week at the earliest. |
No news??!!! But
Guess I'll have to drop him with the shottie. |

Sportsmans guide has a good deal on od stocks right now www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=4&f=64&t=80157

So WTF with the build...? I wanna, and my buddy wanna. Let's make this thing happen....
update -
ZERO of the 5 e-mails to EE vendors have been returned. (most likely because of the holidays) If folks want to go out and get their own parts kits and receivers, that's fine, but I still haven't secured a location with the correct equipment to have the build. I've also contacted 2 machine shops, and was turned down by both for "liability reasons"... Anybody have a heated pole barn with a drill press and a hydraulic press they want to offer up? I'm running out of ideas on where to have this, any input would be most appreciated! |
I have a small (12x24) heated shop with press, drill press, and welder. It's not much, it might be cramped for a large group of people, but it's open to anyone that wants to use it.
I have heated shop, 30x40, drill press, hydraulic press (manual), welder, etc......in Princeton.
Do we have anyone planning to attend who has built a few of these?
