I put one of those Hakko red dot scopes on my AR (knockoff of one of the famous scopes) just to see if I'd like that type of scope.  I haven't shot it yet, but the scope with it's factory rings on my flat top bushy seems like it sits too low.  The red dot lines up exactly on the post of the front sight.  Seems like it should float over the top.  

One top of that it seems like I really have to lean into the rifle to get a decent sight picture.

Anyway, can anyone tell me what it should look like through one of those scopes, and where I might obtain some higher mount rings if that's what's going to be required?

It should co-witness with your irons, ie:  when you have a proper sight picture with your front and rear iron sights, the red dot should be at the very top of the front sight post.  You may be able to adjust the elevation of the Hakko to make it do this, but it sounds like your cheek weld is suffering.

Try moving the sight as far forward as you can, or if you are going to spend the money on higher mounting rings, buy an Aimpoint or a Trijicon.  Check the EE for good deals.

Many people find the dot inline with the sight distracting and mount the optic so the irons are in the lower third of the view through the optic.

You will need to raise the optic with some thing like an Arms Mount in order to co-witness.  If you look at the Aimpoint mounting options for example there is typically a spacer used on the optic mount to raise the optic for co-witness.
