Remington offers $33 million to families of Sandy Hook school shooting victims

Remington Arms Co on Tuesday offered to pay nearly $33 million to nine families to settle lawsuits claiming that its marketing of firearms contributed to the 2012 Sandy Hook school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, where 26 people died.

The proposed settlements would provide $3.66 million to relatives of each victim, subject to approval by the federal judge overseeing Remington's bankruptcy case in Alabama.

Remington's proposed payout is only a small fraction of the damages that the nine families claimed to have suffered.

In a February court filing, their lawyers estimated that wrongful death claims likely totaled more than $225 million, and total claims including punitive damages could exceed $1 billion.

I understand it's sometimes cheaper to settle a lawsuit than perhaps win in the long run, but settling will just give the antis more impetus to try & sue more manufacturers into bankruptcy.

Bean counters have zero fucks to give about gun owners or the industry as a whole.

I work with somebody who personally lost a child there.
They never talk about it, or involved in the lawsuits. They handled the trama and though they never forget that child , have moved forward with their lives.

Now the people with the law suits are parent that are milking this, as a cash cow to put money in their pockets over loss of a child.

While I don't know the actual motivations of the various families involved in the lawsuit I do wonder how influenced they were by lawyers and paid political anti gun groups to file the lawsuit? Seems more than once these kinds of suits are instigated by paid anti gun groups who prey on the raw emotions of the families and who then leave the families holding the bag (lawyer fees) when the lawsuit (rightly) gets tossed on PCLAA or frivolous grounds.

On a side note, people forget as they blame Remington for their “Consider your man card reissued.” ad that is one element of this lawsuit that it was the mother who purchased the Bushmaster AR used in the shooting by her son. Left out of the discussion is the son murdering the mother first with a .22 Savage rifle then taking the AR and the mother's car and going to the elementary school that day. People have to leave out the total context (and the very poor in hind sight decisions by the mother and possibly the father) of what lead up to that horrible event to try and blame Remington and their product advertising.
