Gentlemen!!! I have $900 spare in my pocket right now and I'm in the mood for bolt action rifle. But don't know which one to get. This future rifle will be use for long range practice and target shooting.

I have that same Savage 20" BBL , .308 , AcuTrigger, and I like it alot , I don't think you can find a better, or more accurate rifle, out of the box , for the same money.

I've heard good things about the savages, but I've never shot one of the newer ones with the accu-trigger, if it were my $$, I'd have to try to decide between the winnie mod 70 26" varmit and remy 700 SP both in 308, both can be had with synthetic stocks and have good adj. triggers that can be reliably adj. to 1 1/2 lbs.
I have a win varmit in 22-250 that will put 5 shots inside of 5/8" @100yrds, and have hit prariedogs at 400 with it, and I'm sure that one in 308 would do the same.
and I also have a rem 700 308 with a 22" sporter weight barrel, that used to put 5 shots in an 1" @100yrds., but I've shot it so much with max handloads that its got a bad case of throat erosion, it'll still go inside 2 1/2", but it needs to be rebarreled.
I've had great luck with both of these rifles, like the safety on the win., and the trigger on the rem., it would all depend on how I felt that day as to which one I brought home, I know for sure what base and rings and the glass it would wear though, I'd mount a 10x super sniper scope in steel leupold rings, adj. the trigger how I like it and then start working up a load the rifle liked.

1  price shop those are MSRP's you have quoted their I hope that's not what your paying they can be had for less money guaranteed.  

2 If I am looking at the correct remington its a sporter weight barrel not a heavy barrel like the savage  it's going to get hot faster = groups spread faster  as a general rule of thumb

3 If your not getting both.   308 is the only way to go It's much more versatile

4 I have a pair of savage tactical rifles 223 and 308 they are tac driving MFR's  I bought mine when they first came out many moons ago way before the accu-trig.   Best $650 i ever spent that was for both rifles.

5 GLASS spend lots of money on GLASS

6 I haven't shot that paticular remington but I'd still bet a 12pk the savage will out shoot it.

The only Remington 700 I would get would be a PSS.  The cheapest place I found mine was from www.sportingarms.com and it was $649.  That would leave you enough money for a 10x Super Sniper until you get some more cash for a Nightforce or Leupold.  I know Jason (JTAC) swears by his Savage though.  Don't think you can go wrong with either, I just had to have a 700 myself.

Listen to the ACman! He is right on the money. I have all types of bolt action rifles and the Savages are by far the most accurate from the factory. The Accutrigger makes a big difference in the gun and is worth the money.
I have one 308 Savage Tactical 110L - left handed - that cost me $325 several years ago. In accuracy it compares with a Remington 40X costing $1200!
Savages are ugly but accurate. That short 20" Savage that Bandit is talking about (4x4 model or LE ?) is supposedly a great rifle.
The Tactical models have 24" barrels.
Go with a Savage and good scope!
Go to BassPro, ask for Matt (my son) in the hunting department. Tell him you are a friend of Dan's and want to look at the Savage rifles. He'll give you the rundown on them and tell some no BS hunting stories of big bucks he has shot with his Savage 308.

You might want to check out the Ruger 77 also, I have this same rifle, And right out of the box it is one of the most accurate, dependable, good looking rifles, I personally have ever shot.

Savage Model 110  30.06  

I bought the rifle used for $200 put a $140 composite stock on it and a scope. Shoot 165 gr SPBT all day in very very nice groups!

I say .308 is the way to go!
If you handload like I do,
you can load anything from 100gr to 200gr.
depending on what yer trying to knock down!!!
personaly I like the Remington action it's smooth and quiet.
(that's why the Marine snipers use it) and it's cheaper!

But....
the savage like stated above "ugly,but very accurate!"

although I have a Rem 700 with a custom
barrel "it was chrome sleeved and lapped "

I would say to go for the Rem, and at least have the bore lapped.(if money's tight)
it definatly will increase the accuracy,and "yes" even with a brand new barrel.
If not get the Savage and do the same!!!

I have a Savage 110 in .308.  It came out of the box shooting Remington Cor-locts into a 3/4 hole.  I love the accu-trigger.  It lets you gauge the exact point of trigger break a lot better.  I wish I could get the trigger alone for some other guns.  You just can't go wrong with a 110.

Remington 700 .308 and get the fluted barrel, it will also be tapped for both sling and bipod.

It is the LE, and it shoots Great , It's no M-24, but it's very close , and cost's alot less.

Just get some good Glass for it.

I like the Rem 700P's in .308.  This is one in a McMillan A-5 stock w/ IOR 2.5-10 scope.  Consistent 1/2 minute gun, often much better.  You can have the rifle for about $600 if you shop around, and the IOR scope is about $550-600.  You can add doodads as you get more money, but get a good rifle and glass.  You'll be unhappy with a cheap scope.

BTW, the gun started life as a 1/2 minute shooter, no mods.  I just added the stock for comfort (and did have the trigger adjusted, which is stupid simple).  Every Rem 700P I have shot has been a sub-moa gun out of the box.
