I'll be in SE Virginia for the summer basically. What is there locally that's worth checking out?

Planning on making runs up to DC for some of the museums and such already.

Ideas?

pre local stupidity, I would suggest a stroll up Monument Ave on a nice sunny day,

now,,  it's nothing to see ,

as far as RVA, Hollywood Cemetary, great for a day walk about,  or at least a 1/2 day,

St Johns Church

Shockoe Cemetery (small, so not much time needed,)

white House of the Confederacy ,  not sure if tours are still open,

in PBurg,

Blanton Church
old town has some good eats
The Crater

you can follow Lee's retreat from the area and heat to Appomattox,

if you like the Arts,,   VMFA is in downtown RVA,

short trip up to Charlottesville for the wine,  and Monticello,

If you like the outdoors check out Appomattox Courthouse.  The High Bridge Trail in Farmville.  Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond.

Also there are a lot of good breweries around Richmond as well.  Hardywood, Steambell, the Veil, Triple Crossing.

On of the best things to do is a raft trip down the James through the city.  There are some good outfitters and are worth the guided trip.  I have done it 2x and if is lots of fun.  It is a couple hour trip.  Could also go down to 42nd street park and walk out to the rocks on the river.  Make sure you dont have anything you dont want stolen in your car if you do that though.

Things to do in the Petersburg area?

Seeing the "Welcome to Petersburg" sign in your rearview mirror.

Other than the Civil War stuff, skip Pburg.

There's a drag race track just outside the city in Dinwiddie.

Plenty of civil war stuff nearby. Follow Lee's Retreat from Petersburg to Appomattox. Make sure to hit Saylor's Creek and High Bridge. Confederate Cemetery in Farmville.

If you're into canoes or kayaks, Appomattox River Company and Yak Attack are both in Farmville.

Norfolk Southern train museum in Crewe, but it's small.

Got to hang out on one of the Union artillery positions on the east side of Pburg battlefield. The location was cool. My activities sorta sucked.

So far,

I took our former Marines up to Quantico for the museum.

went up to Chantilly for the big gun show.

Basically it. We usually head up to Richmond for a Total Wine run and to hit up Green Top, Cabelas and REI.

Didn't have as much time as I hoped but thats life.
