No idea and I've never understood why VA has had such a hard on for radar detectors.

Cheaper than a speeding ticket. Non-moving violation I think. Detector isn't confiscated.

When you are in the area that are not familiar or new to you, you might get pulled over when there is a speed trap set up. There are many more instances that you are not actively trying to break the law and the detector can help you not getting pulled over (hopefully) and/or remind you to slow down. |

VA is pretty much the only state to ban the use of radar detectors. Seems that all other states don't seem to have a problem with it.

If you drive over the detector they usually drop the charge.
Most of the enforcement is by the State guys. |

Don't know if they still have them. |

The technique many of them use is a single stage down conversion, and they invariably leak their Local Oscillator (LO). To avoid tuning problems, they sweep the LO over a wider BW and look for ANY signals present. |

A lot of cops are using the LASER radar. Even if you have a good radar detector that picks up laser it’s too late by the time your detector sounds off

Not just radar detectors but draconian tint laws, muffler laws, lift laws, and just about everything (minor fender benders, 81 in 70) is reckless.... After ten years of continuous use of a radar detector in the Commonwealth of Virginia, my friend has not ever come across a radar detector detector or laser speed detection. His only conclusion is that it doesn’t exist to the degree that some claim. He drives around with near impunity.

I used an Escort detector in the 80s and 90s, mostly in Illinois, and the encounters with radar guns were so rare that I stopped using it. I had a boss in Minnesota who used a laser radar jammer, but I never asked him how effective it was.
