No idea and I've never understood why VA has had such a hard on for radar detectors.

Cheaper than a speeding ticket. Non-moving violation I think. Detector isn't confiscated.

Last time I checked, it was a $30 fine. Not a moving violation. Detectors are no longer confiscated.

When you think about it, the only logical reason to have a radar detector is to enable you to violate the speed laws with impunity.

You hear all sorts of arguments about how radar detectors promote safe driving and other such bullshit.

But it all comes down to being able to drive over the speed limit and not getting caught.

not always. When you are in the area that are not familiar or new to you, you might get pulled over when there is a speed trap set up. There are many more instances that you are not actively trying to break the law and the detector can help you not getting pulled over (hopefully) and/or remind you to slow down.

VA is pretty much the only state to ban the use of radar detectors. Seems that all other states don't seem to have a problem with it.

Radar detectors in VA = bad.   MS13 Democrat brownshirts in VA = good.

Not an exaggeration .

If you drive over the detector they usually drop the charge.

Most of the enforcement is by the State guys.

Money and Lazyness.
With no detectors, the Revenuers can use old constant on radar guns and don't have to buy new LIDAR or instant on lowpower Ka units.
Or sit with the Radar Detector Detector and just use it to fish for out of staters.

Tickets are around $50 plus court costs - so $100+

TYCOM - who may or may not run a Uniden R7 in VA.

That reminds me: GEICO Insurance gave a bunch of radar detector detectors to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Department about 10 or 12 years ago.
This was about the same time that GEICO would refuse to sell insurance to anyone who had a radar detector in their vehicle.
The Deputies used the devices fairly regularly for a while. Don't know if they still have them.

Work against cheap detectors.
Not so much against two stage super HET units.

I had a Gull two stage that picked up other peoples detectors.

The technique many of them use is a single stage down conversion, and they invariably leak their Local Oscillator (LO).

To avoid tuning problems, they sweep the LO over a wider BW and look for ANY signals present.

A lot of cops are using the LASER radar. Even if you have a good radar detector that picks up laser it’s too late by the time your detector sounds off

VA hates cars.

Not just radar detectors but draconian tint laws, muffler laws, lift laws, and just about everything (minor fender benders, 81 in 70) is reckless....

Anyway, Guy I was riding with got pulled over for a detector, just a ticket no confiscation (was not speeding either).

Tricky trucker getting around radar detector detector run by VA State Police.  Yes, in VA the police use detectors to see if you have a radar detector.

Well if he was so smart he would have an undetectable detector and not spend 10-15 minutes on side of road. Surprised cops did not look in grill for remote mount.

After ten years of continuous use of a radar detector in the Commonwealth of Virginia, my friend has not ever come across a radar detector detector or laser speed detection. His only conclusion is that it doesn’t exist to the degree that some claim. He drives around with near impunity.

I used an Escort detector in the 80s and 90s, mostly in Illinois, and the encounters with radar guns were so rare that I stopped using it.  I had a boss in Minnesota who used a laser radar jammer, but I never asked him how effective it was.
