cool, have you ever been to one?  what are they like?

I am going to the showplace show this weekend, but could go there sunday, and to the auction on saturday...

do you get good deals and prices?

While I have never been to one of their auctions...  I have been to a couple in VA.

Sometimes you can find terrific deals..  and sometimes people get bidders fever and pay double what you could buy for new...    ...  and that can be at the same sale!

Yep.  Big auctions like this tend to attract dealers who drive the price up to close to what they'd have to pay anyway.  But sometimes you get great deals.

The best auctions are estate sales that have three or four guns in addition to tons of other stuff, particularly if it's way out in the country.  I saw a beautiful broomhandle Mauser go for $125 once when I was broke.

yep, I stopped going to them as I was either broke and it sucked seeing stuff go cheap, or when I had some green, it was idiot haven..

I guess I am just saying don't go to an auction with me as I seem to be bad luck...

I went to a liquidation auction about a year ago and I was so excited because I wanted to get a Beretta CX4 and some Wolf 7.62x39 for cheap.  Well... that didn't happen.  They were only selling 640 rds of Wolf ammunition and the guy beside of me bought it for $110.  Keep in mind this was the days when Wolf ammo was being sold for $94 per 1000 in this area.    I wanted to pull his arm down when it went past $60 but all I could manage to say was... well nothing.

I got up and left when the CX4 price went over $700.

The moral of the story is that there are all kinds of people at those gun auctions, there are the ones that KNOW how much something is worth and then there are the ones that... well... don't.  Unfortunately, the ones that don't know make it suck for the ones that do  And of course, I'm sure other people have completely different experiences with them... but I didn't particularly get lucky.

I would certainly go to another one though because it was enjoyable to me.  Now if only I could afford something this time...

If you see something you want, set a price limit, bid to up to that point and stop. Do not let your self get caught up up in the contest. It is very easy to get carried away.
