Hello, and welcome to the 2006 Phase I pistol & carbine class thread. This years class will be instructed by none other than Mr. David Pennington himself and a yet to be named AI. The class will be held at a private range in South Hill, Virginia.

We will be holding two indentical classes back to back so everybody interested can attend. Dave did not want anybody to miss out.

Class Dates:
Class A: March 10th-12th, 2006
Class B: March 17th-19th, 2006

Cost is $450
Payment will be sent directly to Mr. Pennington. I do not want to handle anybody's money.

400 Handgun
800 Carbine  

Class size:
Each class can have a max of 16 students.
We have 32 available seats.

Accepted Credentials (Need only one of the following):
(1.) Photocopy of current CCW
(2.) Criminal Background check from LEO agency - printed on there letterhead
(3.) Photocopy of active duty military ID card
(4.) Evidence of employment with Local, State, or Federal Law Enforcement Agency


Each of us will need to arrange our own hotel rooms. The range is not equipped for camping, showers, etc.

Basic Gear Requirements:

Nice, but NOT necessary, is:

-a quality handheld flashlight
-a quality weapons mounted light for the carbine
-kneepads
-active ear pro (Peltors/Sordins)

I'd recommend bringing whatever pistol/carbine you use for carry or home defense and using, primarily, the same carry gear you use. If you want to use "tactical" vests/holsters/etc, you are welcome to but this stuff isn't needed.

This class is about building core skills, most importantly safe, efficient gun handling and marksmanship. We all love cool kit and whiz-bang gadgets but this class will focus on the fundamentals. You can do anything required with a $400 Glock and a $400 AK---it might take you a little longer on the timer and it might require a bit more concentration but it can be done."

This is not a class list, nor is it in any particular order.

Please do not be discouraged by the long list. In my expierence it takes 2x the number of actual seats to fill a class. Many people will drop out due to work, family, injuries, money, etc. We have had guys sitting at the bottom of the list make it into both the other classes.

does a participant need all the equipment as described in the syllabus....concealed and non concealed holsters, lasers, lights, etc.  having never taken such a class, i am not sure what all all to bring other than ammo, pistol, carbine.

The range we will be using is private, so directions will not be posted on the net. Only the guys who sign up for the class will get directions.

I would like to be on the list.  I was unable to take a class for 2005 due to a major career change and move, but 2006, watch out!

The gear requirements have been added. Please note that these are just the basic requirements. Nothing fancy or expensive is required as far as gear goes, but feel free to bring/wear whatever you like. This would be a great opportunity to let the experts evaluate your rigs and for you to give them a workout. Dave has assured me we will not need to carry more than three AR mags at any one time. We will have plenty of time to hydrate and load mags. I do not want guys to think they need to run out and buy $500 rigs to attend this class. While they may be usefull and fun, expensive rigs are not a requirement. The goal of this class is to learn from the experts and have a fun & safe time doing it.

Basic Gear Requirements:
-Duty grade pistol with a minimum of 3 spare magazines
-A safe holster (Belt or Tactical) and magazine pouches for at least 2 pistol magazines
-Duty grade carbine with a minimum of 5 magazines
-Reliable AR mag carrier (Belt pouches, Vest, Chest Harness, Etc.) Nothing elaborate or expensive is needed. You will not need to carry more than three AR mags at a time.
-Sling
-Eye and ear protection
-Carbine weaponlight
-Quality handheld flashlight
-Spare batteries for everything (Optics, lights, etc.)
-Weapon cleaning & lubrication gear
-Cold weather and rain gear recommended.

I put this together based off a phone conversation with Dave and the requirements from my last class from 10-8. Dave is going to look it over and let me know if he wants any changes. This should be enough to get the ball rolling for guys who need to purchase items.

Definitely in.  Look forward to Phase II as well.

OK I'll profess ignorance and pray not to be flamed, but can I get a bit of background on the instructor? I'm not big into the training scene (yet) so I just don't know much about who is who, and who people work for, who's got a good rep, etc.

Any info will be greatly appreciated!

-SureFire Scout lights or SureFire 6P/Weaver ring
-USGI or HK mags
-2 point sling (Boonie Packer or Viking Tactics
-I don't like vertical foregrips but Tango Down and KAC make the best
-CAR-15 type stock of whatever style (Colt 4 pos, Colt 6 pos, Crane/LMT, Vltor)

Pistol:

-BladeTech or Alessi holsters/mag pouches
-Wilderness 5 stich or Alessi belt
-Safariland 6004 tactical holster
-SureFire X 200 lights

Misc:

-Peltor ear pro
-Oakley eye pro
-Alta buckle style kneepads
-CED 6000 timer (not for class but for practice)

Sounds great.  Put me on the list please.  I missed the Phase 1 BW Class earlier in the year and was hoping something like this was going to come along again.

I spoke with Dave today and we got the class dates worked out. This info has also been added to the first post in this thread. This was the last detail that needed to be worked out. The class is set. After the first of the year we will need to start getting paperwork and payments sent out to Dave. I will post when it's time. Now it's time for everybody to arrange for the time off, test weapons, buy gear, and set money aside. This is going to be a fun and very informative class. I look forward to it.

I have a question, is this class for the uber-tactical camo-wearing tactical-gear toting survivalists? Or do you take out-of-shape office nerds too? How much experience is required? If I've never had and sort of formal firearm training before and have just been shooting guns for fun, is this class for me?

Oh yeah and does a 20" AR count as a carbine? If not I might have to get something cheap like that kel-tec dealy.

This is the perfect class for you. It is a solid, basic, introduction to weapons handling and marksmanship in a practical setting. The instruction you receive will help you at your current level or provide a basis to build on to reach a more advanced level.

Here's the secret:  advanced, high-speed shooting is just the basics of weapons handling and marksmanship done extremely well. What you'll learn is exactly what makes the the best shooters out their so "high speed"---they just execute it better than most---the basics are the same.

David Pennington is a subject matter expert on tactical equipment, to include body armor, helmets, load-bearing gear, night vision, small arms, and others. He is also experienced in the use of electronic and physical surveillance techniques. David is a former Government Programs Manager and SPEAR BALCS Program Manager for Point Blank Body Armor, ending September 2005. He is currently Vice President for another armor/gear manufacturer and still serves as a reserve Deputy Sheriff at his previous narcotics unit in Virginia. David was formerly assigned to a FBI multi-agency task force as well as a post-911 DEA multi-agency task force. During this assignment, he specialized in the investigation of high profile federal narcotics violations and related violent crimes, and served as the tactical medic for the Richmond (VA) Division FBI SWAT team. David is a Virginia DCJS certified Police Officer, Narcotics Investigator, Undercover Officer, and Law Enforcement Instructor. He is also a graduate of DCJS’s Advanced Tactical School, HK ITD Tactical Entry, and various other specialized law enforcement courses. Do we know of a "you must have your money in by" date?

'cause I haven't been paid in 9 weeks, and may be suing my school. Could be a problem if the money needs to be in "soon".

On the plus side, my mother called and said she and my sister had been to Cabelas. She was going to pick stuff up for me for Christmas, but didn't know what I'd want so, "make a list of that gun stuff you want so I know what to look for".

Somebody needs more Beretta mags, a tac holster, and a belt.

Really glad we're starting from "basics". Nobody I know really shoots much; so far I've been teaching myself pistol from books. Probably why I shoot my Walther okay, and my 92 not so well.
