Any of you guys get run off the road down there?

N.J. police object to stop of 95-mph convoy
Officers heading home from Katrina duty got warning, then got mad

WAYNESBORO -- A speeding New Jersey police convoy should not have been warned to slow down here, its superiors say, despite numerous 911 calls from motorists claiming they were forced off Interstate 81.

An incensed New Jersey sheriff called an Augusta County deputy a "disgrace" for pulling over officers returning home from a Hurricane Katrina relief mission Sept. 18.

Augusta Sheriff Randy Fisher and the Virginia State Police defend the stop because the New Jersey officers were traveling 95 mph with their lights flashing.

Virginia law requires an emergency before officers can speed and activate their lightbars. Instead of a warning, the speeding officers could have gotten citations.{snip}

Aside from the obvious double standard and hypocrisy, I'm mostly amazed at NJ's "official" response.  Here are some of my favorite parts:

" . . . I hope I get the opportunity to show you the same courtesy up here in New Jersey."

"Courtesy", and revenge, from a professional sworn to uphold the law - nice. . .

"law enforcement is all about supporting each other"

I thought it was about public safety, and maybe even about following and enforcing the law. Guess I'm behind the times.

" . . . We take offense at the way they were treated."

He must mean that he is offended that the officers were not arrested, as anyone else running 95 would have been. Or, perhaps that they were only verbally warned and not ticketed.

"law enforcement is all about supporting each other"

Funny, NJ LEOs always used to forget this when they arrested other out of state LEO's for off duty carry before the federal LEO carry law passed. NJ's police culture sure seems to breed a higher than normal amount of authoritarian ,"Judge Dredd" types. If anyone can't cry for "professional courtesy", it's NJ police.
That said, I'm not particularly fond of the whole "professional courtesy" idea in the first place. If the law is not worth enforcing, then get rid of the law or treat everyone subject to it in a consistent manner.

I wish the VA state police put down those road barriers that blow out your tires when you drive over them in front of them. Blowing out the tires of a whole convoy of corrupt NJ police would have been hee-larious.

It shows how some LOEs think they are above the law.  They came from ripping guns out of the hands of people who had every right to stay home and protect their families.  Now they expect to just run us off the road as they race back home.  They don’t care about citizens.  We just get in their way of expressing power.

What arrogant assholes!  If it had been one of us, we would lose our license without a slick lawyer.  I say let them continue to pitch a fit.  Just digging themselves deeper in the hole.  I think the officer that pulled them over should be commended for doing the right thing.

Ill Post this email that was sent to me by a fellow LEO in Va. He sent this email to the Sheriff in NJ.

Here's a good one for you.  I copied that guy from NYPD and Sheriff Speziale from NJ and Speziale responded back to me.  What a jerk and tells me to get my facts straight when he obviously hasn't since he refers to Virginia officers not responding because "no one asked them too".  I don't know about you but I saw where several troopers and I know a dozen Henrico Officers are indeed down there.  Anyway, I've copied his response to me.  I'm not sure about you all but he refers to me as "Sir" and the last time I checked, Clara Romaine sounds more like a "Ma'am" to me.

Anyway, the only thing I added when responding to him in my last email to the bottom of what I sent the NYPD guy is this...

And Sheriff Speziale, why would you even remotely think it's okay for
Virginia officers to NOT do their job because if it were you being run off
the road, you'd be the first one crying Virginia isn't doing it's job.
Again, what was the hurry??  IF the equipment needed to get back that fast,
then you shouldn't have sent it.  It's not like half the country, including
hundreds of Virginia officers/troopers, aren't down there assisting.  How
great would one of you men/women feel if they accidentally killed someone,
to include a trooper, due to the erratic driving?  Instead of teaching your men and women to
have some integrity or dignity, you're showing them you think it's perfectly
okay for them to break the law and get away with it because they carry a
badge.

The sheriffs Response.

Thank you for your thoughts and comments regarding the incident in Virginia.
However, let me start by saying that I have spent 25 years in law
enforcement and I am in total disbelief that your conclusions are based upon
newspaper articles.  You have convicted my officers, supervisors, several
other police department and even me without conducting any investigation.
While I was not in New Orleans, I did speak to the officers who were stopped
as well as members of NYPD who consequently were stopped both going to New
Orleans as well as returning.  In every case they stated the same thing.
They were pulled over and told in a demeaning, threatening manner that they
have no authority to use their red lights, that they could not speed on "MY
HIGHWAY" and that there was no emergency (going or coming).  They were told
that they would be monitored the rest of their trip thru Virginia.  Virginia
authorities called the dispatch center here in New Jersey and stated that
they would arrest our personnel if they saw them using their emergency
lights.  These convoys drove at the same exact speed with their lights on
through every state between New York and New Orleans.  Every state except
Virginia waived them on and/or escorted them.  Motorists waived, clapped and
gave them the high sign.   In fact, our contingent stopped at two major
accident scenes in Tennesse, closing off the road until law enforcement
responded.  They were not doing "over 90mph" since speed was never really an
issue until the Virginia authorities needed a "cover story and excuse.

Consequently, my Chief spoke to a high ranking member of New Jersey State
Police who was going to New Orleans in the middle of the night and he was
doing 10 mph over the speed limit.  After identifying himself he was told in
a very arrogant manner that he had no authority in Virginia and to slow
down, or else.

I should note that, according to your Virginia Newspaper, Virginia
authorities never responded to New Orleans "because nobody asked them to."
Shows you where their humanitarian assistance, brotherhood and comradery is.

This was a national emergency as ordered by the President.  While there is a
difference in response to a scene and from a scene you may want to consider
the following:  Our personnel were in an area that the Center for Disease
Control ordered everyone out of.  They spent 14 days searching disease
invested homes, handling dead bodies and then sleeping in contaminated
areas. Our Task Force was directed to respond home and report directly to
our HAZMAT unit for decontamination.  They had to be showered, some of their
clothes burned and the cars deconned.  In addition, the equipment was passed
on for the second waive to respond.

I should also note that  one's "REPUTATION" always stays with you..
Virginia State Police has a reputation that I am aware of going back to 1986
when my Chief  attended the FBI National Academy.  I could spend pages
telling you stories of their treatment of local, out of state and federal
officers.

There is a pattern here and the pattern is that a multitude of law
enforcement agencies have historically been harrased by the Virginia
Authorities.  Additionally, do you find something wrong with the fact that
no law enforcement agency in the response to Katrina was stopped in any
other state but Virginia.

Sir, I would hope the next time before you write you take a good look at the
facts before convicting 15 officers in the newspapaper.

As stated, I stand behind my heroic officers, wish you all the best in
Virginia, look forward to meeting you someday if are paths are destined to
cross.  Unfortunately, I probably won't get that chance because I am not
planning to visit your lovely state anytime soon!

Very truly yours,

Jerry Speziale

Not to change the subject and show just how clueless this NJ Sheriff is, but my county (Loudoun) tried to send deputies, who were turned back by FEMA before they'd even left the state.

BTW it's probably just as well that this convoy was on I-81 and not I-95.  Pulling those types of BS traffic maneuvers along I-95 in the DC metro area would have gotten them shot...

I need to give a VA cop a break when Im scoring the next pistol match.

I beg your pardon... Unless you are a LEO then I dont believe you have a right to make that assumption.

Tell me how you know that  LEO in N.C dont do the same thing. If  you are a LEO then maybe you have a right to argue this but if not then you dont and its in eveyone's best interest if you keep your disrespectful comments to yourself.

I have never experienced anything but the utmost professionalism from any of my encounters with the VA State po po, even the ones that resulted in my getting a ticket.

I cannot say the same about any other law enforcement agency.

The fact that they enforce the law, no matter the circumstances, speaks volumes about them.

And fuck those yankees.

+1

I've gotten tickets in MA, MD and VA.... I always treated the officers in a polite manner and the only ones that have given me the same courtesy were VA police.

That said, I've heard for years that VA LEO's, especially the VSP are known for not cutting other LEO's a break with traffic offenses. They believe that everyone should follow the law, and being and LEO isn't an excuse for breaking the law.

Good -- my already-high regard for the VSP just went up 10,000fold.  Those who uphold the law should be held to the standard, not cut a break.  I am grateful the VSP feel the same way.

Looks like the VSP isn't liked because they apply the law to everyone. Good on 'em.

I always have to chuckle to myself at my comments like "fuck those yankees", as I was born in NEW JERSEY hehehehehehehehe.  But I only lived there for 6 mos, so I don't claim any allegiance to the state.

I escaped PRNJ and lived in VA for 12 years. The culture of many NJ LEOs is that they are above the law.

i bet the truckers all up and down 81 were thrilled with these yokels flying in and out of traffic.

the others on the road were under no legal obligation to yield the right of way to those officers.  and if they wanted to go that fast for whatever reasons without issues they should have called ahead and asked for an escort.  but i guess that kind of responsibility is out of the question for them.

if you are contaminated by hazmat you don't get in your car and drive 1000 miles.  you get decontaminated on site.  doing otherwise may potentially spread disease across a huge area.
