George Allen Needs to Return to his Pro-Gun Position

September 16, 2003

In 2000, Senator George Allen won his Virginia Senate seat in spite
of his flip flop on the Clinton gun ban.

The Clinton-Feinstein law bans many semi-automatic rifles and
shotguns made after the date of enactment in 1994.  And despite the
fact that gun banners falsely claim these guns are "assault
weapons," the truth is that these firearms are not used by a single
military anywhere in the world.

As Sen. Allen has admitted to Mike McHugh of Virginia Gun Owners,
the law was useless in fighting crime.  (Indeed, since they have
hardly ever been used by criminals, it is logical that a ban on
these firearms would be useless in fighting crime.)

Senator Allen returned the GOA candidate's questionnaire when he ran
for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1992 and for governor in
1993.  Both times he pledged his opposition to banning
semi-automatic firearms.

Then, while a candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2000, Allen refused
to return his GOA questionnaire.  Toward the end of the campaign, he
expressed his support for the current law -- a law which has a
sunset built in for September 13, 2004.

Now Senator Allen says he will vote to renew the ban to honor his
2000 campaign position.

GOA would like him to oppose the ban and to honor his signed pledges
which he gave to GOA in 1992 and 1993.

Please send the message below to Senator Allen urging him to uphold
the Constitution and reminding him that banning guns is a political
loser.  You can do so by going to his webform at
http://allen.senate.gov/email.html to copy and paste the letter (or
write your own).

----- Pre-written letter -----

Dear Senator Allen,

I urge you to keep your 1992 and 1993 written campaign promises to
oppose banning semi-automatic firearms.  As you know, the
Clinton-Feinstein gun ban violates the U.S. Constitution under the
Second and Tenth Amendments.  Clearly, Congress has overstepped its
authority in banning these firearms.

Not that banning guns is good politics anyway.  Former President
Bill Clinton repeatedly stated that passage of the 1994 semi-auto
ban cost his party control of the Congress.  Many Representatives
lost their jobs because they voted for this ban.

Since you have admitted that the ban is useless for fighting crime,
we need this law off the books so that cops are not distracted from
legitimate police work going after real criminals.  It is immoral to
make it illegal for someone to own a firearm protected by the
Constitution.

Federal gun control laws need to be repealed.  This is a good place
to start.

Please let me know whether you plan to honor your oath of office to
uphold the Constitution.  This is the most important promise you
have made as a candidate and a Senator.

Sincerely,
