Hey guys.  Please forgive my ignorance here but I figured ya'll would be the people to ask.  I'm a Virginia native and will be traveling through Illinois towards Kansas in the fall for a pheasant hunt.  Are there any 'extreme' rules when it comes to transporting firearms in your state?  We'll have the shotguns broken down in their cases but I've got a carry permit for everywhere I need to go except Illinois.  Do I have to break the pistol down at the state line and lock it up or anything ridiculous like that?  Thanks in advance.

Rule of thumb, mags unloaded and away from the gun, all guns cased and stores out of reach of the driver.  And dont take any more time than you absolutely need to while travelling through this godforsaken communist shithole.

Seriously, if you can make it thru without stopping, do it.  Just watch your speed and you'll be fine.

I assume you will be travelling through southern IL on the way to KS.  In that case I really wouldn't get all worked up about it as the likelyhood of running into LEO that is anti-gun would be pretty remote.

Unloaded, in an enclosed gun case and inaccessable (locked case, in trunk, etc.) and you have nothing to worry about.

Still file the 5320.20 , but like he said, going through Southern IL shouldn't present any issues

He didn't say he was carrying any NFA items. Why would he still need the 5320.20?

OP, for non-NFA items, the Illinois State Police recommend:

IF A NON-RESIDENT IS COMING TO ILLINOIS
TO HUNT AND WOULD LIKE TO BRING
THEIR FIREARM, HOW DO THEY LEGALLY
TRANSPORT IT?
Non-residents must be legally eligible to possess
or acquire firearms and ammunition in their state of
residence. It is recommended that in order to be in
compliance with all statutes, non-residents transport
all firearms:
1. Unloaded, and
2. Enclosed in a case, and
3. Not immediately accessible or broken down in a
nonfunctioning state.
