Gun owners beware: Jim Ryan announces run for Illinois Governor
The last time Illinois gun owners heard from former Attorney General Jim Ryan, Illinois government was in turmoil and Ryan wanted to be Governor.  The more things change, the more they stay the same . . . . . Ryan was eager to position himself for a run at the Governor's Mansion, and he was convinced as many politicians were in those days that there was only one correct side on the gun issue: moderate to anti-gun.  But what could he do to establish his anti-gun bona fides without alienating the deer hunters? He settled on a dramatic sting operation to catch people selling "assault weapons." Unfortunately, there was no practical way to crack down on such weapons using his jurisdiction as Illinois Attorney General, so he set his investigators the task of buying as many "assault weapons" as they could, as illegally as they could.  In the end, the only way they could accomplish their task was to find people who wanted to sell their firearms legally in interstate commerce, then convince them that it would be legal to circumvent federal law in some specific way.

Link to Youtube video of Ryan's announcement.

The last time Ryan was discussed on gun boards, it was because of his "online sting" operation from 2000.  He was the Attorney General of Illinois back then, and he had his investigators try to buy "assault weapons" illegally from out of state buyers over the internet.  They couldn't find anyone willing to do that, so they took the legal sellers and told them that what they wanted to do was legal.  They went as far as to claim that they had checked with local FFLs and gotten legal advice . . . and then they tried to put people in jail for trying to follow the law.  Now he wants to be Governor again.

In fairness to Ryan, this is the same kinds of things police at all levels have been doing for years on a regular basis.

So that justifies this type of law enforcement. Fairness and Fair shakes are for people that deserve them not this scumbagger. Does Bloomberg come to mind. He has the same tard factor.

Fuck Jim Ryan.

He was a big cheerleader for gun control every time it came down the pike too.  AWB, etc.

He also tried the gun show stings too.

As I recall it, ISP or "informants" would drop a $20 on a table and take a box of ammo.  30 minutes later, ISP arrests the vendor for not requiring the buyer show a FOID card, seizing his money while they are at it.

At Guns Save Life we took a lot of wind out of that nascent program by telling everyone far and wide:  If someone drops money on your table "to buy" a box of ammo and runs off with the ammo without showing a FOID card, the vendor should shout "STOP THIEF!" and demand the arrest of the person taking the ammo.

I am not justifying the actions of Jim Ryan, assuming what the op staed was true. Only pointing out it is a very common thing for police to do. We should not be outraged that some individual may have allowed osme of his underlings to do it so much as livid that it happens at all.

They don't just do this kind of thing with guns and ammo.

Can't and won't ever support a candidate for any office that doesn't support my rights.

Jim Ryan is and always has been a loser, and the Republicans need to go back to the conservative side and lose all those that are
not voting the way the voters want. If not then we need to dump both of the satus quo parties and start a new one.

How can they win and then just vote however they want, ignoring those that elected them.

Like our elected schmucks that voted for the stimulis package when it was clear the people were overwhelmingly against it.

Elect the man or women based on what they stand for and believe, never vote for the straight party ticket.

That being said, I find myself having a hard time voting for Democrats that could support the current heads of the Democrat
party and the crap they are pushing.

Bob, you've known me awhile.  I assure you everything in that story is true.  The quoted conversations come from the transcripts created by the AG investigators themselves at the time, and I got them from the story done by John O'Connor of the Associated Press in December of 2001.

The thing to remember about Jim Ryan is that we've got so many other options.  We aren't stuck with him unless he wins the primary (and that only if you're a Republican, although I don't think I'd care to vote for Pat Quinn or Dan Hynes, either.)

We have Kirk Dillard . . . he sat down with some concealed carry advocates the other night and, without going into too many details, he'd stump for concealed carry and sign it.  Last time concealed carry had a chance in Illinois, he sponsored the bill, and it came within two votes of passing the legislature in 1995 (his later-boss Edgar would have vetoed it––but Edgar won't be the Governor this time.) I believe the entire Executive Branch from the Governor's office on down through DNR and the State Police would be a lot less hostile under Dillard, and it's not like anyone can dismiss him as some fringe candidate.

I heard Bill Brady is having trouble with funding, but if anything, he's more pro-gun than Dillard.  Same deal with Dan Proft and Adam Andrzejewski (An-jee-EFF-ski)––both very long shots to win anything, but both staunch pro-2nd-Amendment guys.

In the Senate race, Illinois GOP leaders are going to claim that we have to accept Mark Kirk because no one else can win.  In the Governor's race, if anything, Jim Ryan is the underdog.  He had his shot in 2002 when he'd been Attorney General for years previous and wasn't coming out of nowhere (as most voters will see it) and he failed then.  This month his own polls said 19% of the respondents thought he was either George Ryan or closely related.  The only stinkers in this race on the Republican side are Jim "No, Baby, It's Perfectly Legit" Ryan and Andy "The Outsider" McKenna.

He has no chance.  To be quite honest he has the same last name as the other one and he is basically spoiled goods.  People know only names and not history.

I did  not mean to imply your story was false. Only that it is not really something I have personal knowledge of. In any case, LE uses this kind of entrapment technique on an almost routine basis, so its not as if it is strictly something related to firearms.

The thing to remember about Jim Ryan is that we've got so many other options.  We aren't stuck with him unless he wins the primary (and that only if you're a Republican, although I don't think I'd care to vote for Pat Quinn or Dan Hynes, either.)
I agree there are far better options from an issue stand point.

We have Kirk Dillard . . . he sat down with some concealed carry advocates the other night and, without going into too many details, he'd stump for concealed carry and sign it.  Last time concealed carry had a chance in Illinois, he sponsored the bill, and it came within two votes of passing the legislature in 1995 (his later-boss Edgar would have vetoed it––but Edgar won't be the Governor this time.) of the republican candidates he seems to be the best one that has some chance of pulling it off.

Agreed. But its not about the perfect candidate. its about winning. And while Brady has an outside chance at it, the other two you mentioned have no chance at all.

In the Senate race, Illinois GOP leaders are going to claim that we have to accept Mark Kirk because no one else can win.
And they are right.

Ryan has a long time to convince the voters he is not G. Ryan. I find McKenna's ads claiming to be an outsider just this side of ludicrous. However, both of them are long time insiders with access to what is left of the IL GOP. If anyone can make enough of the shambles of the party in IL, its not going to be an outsider. Its going to be someone with a long history of political experience that can convince the money men it is possible for him to win. otherwise, the phone banks and hordes of lawn signs just won't exist. It may not be the most desirable way to select a governor, but it is the way it works. You cannot win the race without a lot of support from the party and a lot of money. No way around that.

Dillard also stumped for Obama and is a RINO to the core.

Dillard also stumped for Obama and is a RINO to the core.

IIRC, Dillard is a close friend of Obama, despite being on opposite sides of the fence politically. I don't recall him 'stumping" for Obama, although he may have in Iowa.

Politicians do that kind of thing for each other.

Dillard is not exactly a pillar of conservatism, but he is on the right side of a lot of issues.

Supposedly he is a 2A supporter, although that could mean just about anything.

I have read in various places that Jim Edgar is supporting him. Edgar was the last decent governor the state had. Not exactly a pillar of conservatism either, but the budget was balanced, and the state paid its bills.

I sure am glad you clarified your remark (in red) as I almost blew chunks of my Snicker's bar out my nose reading it.

Dillard was featured, as a co-star, in one of the Kenyan's campaign ads.

Dillard's a RINO, Edgar's a RINO. Obama's a leftist-radical socialist that Dillard openly supported in the Presidential election. Anyone who supported this leftist-radical socialist will not get my vote. If he didn't have the sense to see what Obama is, he does not deserve to be in office.

Simple as that.
