I think I may be sent up there to work on a project for a few weeks. I have heard that you have laws similar to California's there.  An AR 15 and a Pistol travel with me all the time in my truck. What's the scoop on these in your state? TIA

Where in the state are you going to be?

Both the AR and pistol will be illegal in Chicago, regardless of their condition.

Unless you're passing through.  FOPA protects you there.

Thanks guys, I'll be just west of Chicago, Yorkville area. Is a Soft case OK? What is considered unloaded? Mags removed? or no rounds in Mag?

Encased and unloaded means weapon in a case, bag, whatever, no rounds in chamber, no mags in gun.
Magazines can be loaded but must be in a separate compartment or separate bag.

It's not all that restrictive considering we don't have CCW

Illinois Gun Law Summary at PACKING.org

Hope this helps,
Mike

You will be fine in Yorkville, just don't head over to Aurora or Naperville.

Not true.

"Unloaded and encased" are the key words.

It doesn't matter whether or not you keep a loaded mag in the same case, as long as it's not in the gun.
