Daley revives crusade for gun-control laws

By Gary Washburn
Tribune staff reporter
Published January 5, 2006

In what has become an annual rite, Mayor Richard Daley on Wednesday called on the General Assembly to pass "common-sense" gun control bills that he said are designed to save lives and help police without hurting hunters and other legitimate firearms enthusiasts.

And an official of the National Rifle Association once again countered that the legislative package is an attempt to chip away at the constitutional rights of Illinois gun owners.

Daley appeared with other elected officials and gun violence opponents at a news conference at police headquarters to voice support for proposed measures that would ban semiautomatic assault weapons and .50-caliber rifles; require state licensing of gun dealers; limit handgun purchases to one a month per person; and dramatically expand provisions of a trigger-lock bill approved last session.

"Some people have asked us, `Why do you continue to push these bills every year when they never pass?'" Daley said. "These same people said we would never close the gun-show loophole. But we did, and the law took effect Sunday."

That new measure requires criminal background checks of people who buy weapons at gun shows.

Todd Vandermyde, the NRA's lobbyist for Illinois, said in an interview that support for firearms rights remains strong in the state.

And he scoffed at the suggestion of one gun-control advocate at the news conference that suburban Republican legislators, under pressure from constituents for new controls, have helped "change the dynamic in Springfield" on the gun issue.

"One thing we are guaranteed to see in the new year is another call for useless gun control by the mayor," Vandermyde said. The Police Department is making progress in its fight against violent crime, Police Supt. Philip Cline said at the news conference.

Aggravated batteries committed with guns were down by 6percent last year, and for the first time in five decades, the number of homicides in Chicago was fewer than 500 for two consecutive years, he said. Nevertheless, 447 people were killed in the city last year, most of them with guns, Cline said.

Vandermyde contended that the improving crime statistics have nothing to do with gun legislation.

"The crime rate has been going down because Phil Cline and those guys are doing what we say [they should do]--arrest the bad guys, put pressure on the bad guys," he said.

I saw that loon on the news the other night going on and on about this.  I just can't figure this guy out.  One handgun a month?  How is that going to curb crime?  Because, correct me if I am wrong, it's not you and I going out and knocking over banks, right?

And can someone please explain to me why a 50 cal is needed?  I mean, how many drive by shootings are being pulled off with a 50?  I can't even imagine shooting one from a car.

I just don't understand that man.

Being one of 3 states with no provision for lawful concealed carry is common sense? Does the mayor realize that crime is down nationwide since the "assault weapons" AKA Brady ban expired? The guy is out of his mind or too stubborn to admit he's wrong about guns and crime.

Liberal Babyboomers will NEVER admit they are wrong. Hell, that's most Babyboomers. Liberal Boomers are the epitome of the "My, Me, Mine" generation.

Anyone who can do second grade math knows that gun control does nothing but spike crime. Daley and his movement will die when his generation is launched from power. Younger folks in this country are less likely to buy inyo politically correct BS. Times they are a changin' as the punch drunk Bob Dylan once wrote.

Funny, when I was a kid and my folks were in their thirties the WW2 generation hit their 50's and 60's and were shoved out of the work place and considered "old" and "out of touch" yet now I see TV commercials with 60 year old men playing the Star Spangled Banner on electric guitars with the narrarator of the commercial quoting "what's next for this generation?"

Babyboomer ideology is wildly out of touch. From gun control to corporate standards, it's time for some new blood.

People like Daley highlight how stupid fuzzy warm Liberal bullshit has become. Few, minus those in the never ending Liberal vacuum buy that type of nonsense anymore.

Daley knows very well the gun control does not work. Only the deluded, insulated soccer moms, their ball-less husbands and ritilin drugged rugrats actually "believe" the gun control would work.

For Daley, Blago and their Fellow Travellers, gun control is a means to an end:  a Social Engineering plan to transform our State and Nation into an Orwellian, Socialist/Fascist "peole's state". To Daley, Schumer, Feinstein, Bloomberg, etc, the Nanny States of Europe are the paragon of Civilization, where the Clout-Weilders, (the "Purveyeors of Pull", as Ayn Rand called them as far back as the 1930's), rule the brain-dead Masses with a iron fist hidden beneath a vevet glove, all the while stealing our lives, freedom and money.

Daley could care less about crime. Just like his father, he NEEDS the rampaging thugs to keep the masses in fear, not to mention to votes he garners by convincing the minority community that he's trying to save their gang banging sons and welfare queen daughters, by pushing gun control.

The "Greatest Generation" may have defeated fascism in Europe, but they've supported FDR-style Socialism from Day One. Their Boomer offspring continued the trend: eagerly trading away their freedom for the comfy perks of the Nanny State.

Guys, don't generalize too much. I'm at the age where I was just a little too young to have fought in Vietnam although I do know guys my age who did make it there just before the pull-out.
There are plenty of people in my generation who are liberal, socialist leaning weenies. But, there are plenty of people who are not.
By the same token, there is now a new generation of the metrosexuals coming into power.
Just be careful what you wish for.

Amen to what sleepercaprice1 just wrote. Sounds like I'm about the same age as him and the younger ones I work with scare me with their liberal attitudes towards gun control, entitlement programs, etc. Makes for some interesting discussions/arguments. At least when I can get them to stop playing with their cell phones, talking about their Playstation and their next party.

I am also of the mind we need common sense firearms laws, but I believe Mayor Daley and I differ on the types of laws we need.

First, pass a new law allowing concealed carry.

Second, pass a new law making the ownership and transportation regulations the same statewide and not let small communities in Cook County inflict their own draconian laws on law abiding citizens.

Third, pass a new law mandating long prison sentences for felons who use a firearm in a drive by shooting, armed robbery, murder.  How about a minimum of 30 years for any of the above and the death penalty if anyone is killed.  Let's see some movement on death row.  Electric bleachers would be a good start.

Fourth, pass a law that protects a homeowner who has to use a firearm in self defense.

Last but not least, pass legislation to eliminate many of the laws on the books and streamline everything into simple understandable legislation.

Mayor Daley, are you listening?  I didn't think so.
