I'm toying with the idea of petitioning my parent company to relocate me to Vegas.  They build a ton of casinos and hotels there and that is what I'd be doing (i8n management) if I moved.  I've never even visited there so I know absolutely nothing about the area.

What would be your take on living arangements to make the commute easy?  Is it possible to live somewhere with 1/2 to a full acre and still have a relatively easy commute?  If not are there reasonable townhouses that make a 30 minute commute possible?  If I were to buy I'd probably be in the $300k range.

What is the situation like with shooting?  Are there action rifle and pistol matches close by?  Good facilities for matches like this?

What about taxes? sales, income, and property?

Any and all information is appreciated.

You're either a brave soul, or a foolish one.
ANY relocation deserves a week's scout, with specific endeavors and accomplishments DAILY.......
Lack of response here is 'cause us locals KNOW LV is a complex environment; no quick 'n easy take on it. Gotta be comfortable or it WILL be hell..... Drop by, and see for yourself; let us know when and where.

I'm not too worried about "hell", but obviously if I started to get serious about it I'd take a trip out.  I'd likely have to do so anyway to talk to the people from our parent company that work there currently.  I'm young (31), single, and really have no financial ties to where I am right now so moving for me would be much easier than for alot of other people.

There are alot of places to find that have a commute for 30 minutes or less.
The heat is not that bad.  Remember it is a dry heat.  I know, let the jokes start....

$300k is probably on the low side as far a home prices, condos are do-able at that price, but houses in good areas are a little harder to find.

1/2 acres are around, but the prices are going to be higher.

I think it is a good move, FL to NV.

A visit is a must.  Scout out the area.

Well, it is not Fl.

110f is not just a number on the weather map, especially if you work outside.

It is pretty dry here, and will take some getting used to.

To answer your direct questions:

Commute?  LOL  Nothing is that far away, unless you live in Henderson & work in Summerlin.  30 minutes will usually take me anywhere I want to go.

Property values are exploding.  300k will buy you a nice house, but not much property.  "Zero Lot Line" bullshit is common, and a recent article in the paper outlined a builders proposal to reduce the 12 foot wide "backyards" on his project to 10 feet, so he could meet the front setback rules...

If you really want a half acre, you will have to move to Mesquite or Pahrump.  Then you will indeed have a commute, and the run from Pahrump has been deadly lately.  Literally. 2 lane road full of assholes that should not have a car.

Shooting facilities.  We have one large outdoor private range with good facilities - Desert Sportsman.   Plenty of open desert places to shoot informally.  Several indoor ranges in town.  Of course, there is dr. pizza's show out in Pahrump.  A decent trap club, not too far out of town.

Taxes.  NO personal income tax.  Sales tax is 7.75% right now.  Property taxes are reasonable when compared to boundary states.

I like it here, even with all of the growth.  I have been launching lead here since 1972, and still shoot in some of the same places.  I never need tire chains, or flood insurance.  Never lost a roof to a hurricane.  And, we have Oscar Goodman for a big bellylaugh!

Better Arm up Homie! You actually might have to use your CCW gun here. Yes it is true, lots of California maggots from Southern Cali here causing trouble, thinking they own the place.  I myself am a California maggot as well but from Northern California and minding my own business. Just here to get educated at UNLV. But they wont leave me alone!!! I got car jacked by two latin men by UNLV at Koval and Tropicana on a friday in broad day light at 2pm.  Almost mugged twice while filling up at gas station on Flamingo and Decatur. Gun saved my life all those times.

It takes 30 minutes to get anywhere around here. 2 miles or 20 miles=30 minutes.
I moved here from NC and I like it, I miss the trees back east and all the water we had. All in all it's nice here. I just stay away from the strip. Freakin whackos down there.

C2, I have lived in this hole all my life. I have seen it go from a some what descent town to an over grown shit hole. Basicly , im in a rut. As far as where would I prefer? The Peace was mighty beautiful when I was up there. Bears (2 types), deer(2 types), coyote, wolfs, moose, elk, antelope, water foul , and several kinds of grouse. Not to mention scenery and even some seasons. But, the gun laws suck, my kids live here and my wife wont move. So Like I said, Im stuck . It dont really matter.

This place isn't that bad.... we have a lake, mountains and great night life all within 40 minutes of each other. This town is full of concerts of every type of music. Gun laws are lax. Great dining.  Doesn't snow.

I have been here all my life and love it more and more. This town has grown from a little spot to gamble into a community. There are parks everywhere with community events.. there are car shows all the time... we still have the small-town parades Downtown.. we have a NASCAR track....... it's getting better all the time.

thanks,
Ron

For 300k, you may be able to find a bare lot with utilities on site.

Easy commute??? Depends on where you are working.

The 300k range for a house isn't what it used to be. For mid to high 300's, you can find a home around 2000 sq ft.

To give you an idea, my house has appreciated over 440k in the past 3 years.

Here's another perspective:

I am from Massachusetts originally and have been here a year and a half now and once was on this board asking the same questions.I moved out here to get on the police force and I am now a Police Officer with the Las Vegas Metro Police. There's negative aspects to everthing, which I don't gernerally dwell on, so here's the positive aspects about Las Vegas:

unlimited restaurants,shopping, nightlife,shows,UFC, etc 24/7

lots of gun freedom (CCW, open desert shooting, indoor ranges, gun shops, gun shows, etc.)

lots of outdoor freedom (Lake Mead,Mt. Charleston,Red Rock,Sourthen Utah,Great Basin National Park, the Grand Canyon, etc.)Unlike many major cities you get away from people and civilization pretty quick in Las Vegas.

virtually every type of outdoor activity (camping, hiking, skiiing, hunting, etc) within a reasonable drive of the city.

Lots of job opportunities

no state taxes

low cost of living (at least compared to Massachusetts)

Hope this helps

+1 SGT_GRUNT

On the other hand we do have a lot of "Left Coasters" moving here who are trying to push their liberal agenda on us.

I have lived here 30 years and I have seen changes that I never would have dreamed would happen.

All in all I still like living here, but I am not used to being told what to do by a bunch of Nannies. Las Vegans can take care of themselves, just ask anyone who has been here for more than 20 years what I am talking about.

Hell, I still have Blue cards that have Ralph Lamb's name on them!

Be Safe.

Six months ago, I believe I heard that the average price of a home in Las Vegas was 300k. If you want to live in a new, upscale neighborhood, forget 300k. Half Acre lot ? You MIGHT be able to buy a dump on a half acre for 600k.
We have a VERY high rate of divorce. This is a community property state. There are tons of beautiful women here. Getting laid is as easy as buying the morning paper. But don't marry one of them.

I love it here. I moved here in 1984 and consider it the best move I could have possibly made.
The economy here is kind of unusual. Jobs that would be very low paying jobs elsewhere can be very good paying jobs here. In other cases, the opposite is true. I work at one of these jobs. In my home town my job would pay barely enough to put food on the table. Here, I make a good living. Without going into details, I probably make in three years what one of those guys makes in his career. But of course, it costs a hell of a lot more to live here.

We might not like the traffic, heat, warm and fuzzy liberals, Kommiefornians and everything else that is destroyin' the comfortable way of life here in the South, but y'all needs to watch them thar P's and Q's

Back when I worked as a creative developer for a company based out of Pasadena (I did my work at home and sent everything in via email, yay global information-driven society!), my boss (that certifyable bitch) would time-to-time make business trips to Las Vegas and want me to come to the conference with her 'since I was in the area.'

Try as I might, I couldn't convince her that I lived closer to L.A. than I did to Las Vegas and a trip to each would take me about nine hours. It completely confounded her, like it was beyond her realm of comprehension that I didn't live anywhere near Las Vegas. Ah, city folk.

I'm from FL originally too.  Moved to MT for a few years, then made my way to Vegas.  I like it here personally.  I don't get caught up in the tourist trap stuff, but the city around the strip has everything to offer that you would find in any other medium sized city.

I don't mind the brown instead of green thing (which really bugs my parents when they come to visit).  I like the dry climate - my sinuses never act up here, but were constantly stuffed up in FL.

Being from FL, I was raised around boats and boating, and there is a lot of good boating around here as well.  Mead is OK, but I prefer Mojave for the nice water and Havasu for the action.

Homes are getting up there now.  $300k for your average starter home.  I'm on .25 acre in a planned community (that's oversized here LOL), at the end of a cul-de-sac and it's a decent place.  I bought it new 8 years ago for $130k though, so you see the values.  1/2-1 acre is $200k for bare land around here...and it's getting harder to find and farther out.

My recommendation is to rent/lease for your first year, until you get a grip on what areas are like, and decide where you want to live.

E-mail me if you have other questions if you want.

moved out here a year ago from texas (south houston) and lived in FL 2 years.  i have spent the majority of my life on the water, i have pissed more saltwater than most people have seen, and i'm only 33.  this rocks and nothing but rocks thing i killing me.

haveing said that, i do really like it here.  there really is a lot to do here off the strip.  and the off-roading, hiking and you can shoot just about anywhere.

and comming from where you are, dry aint the word.  i was used to putting on lotion at 70% humidity.......your lucky to see 30%!!!!!!  seriously!  and 100, 110 really isn't that bad, especially if there is shade.  but this 115, 120 is a little much.  my sinuses are actually worse cause they are always dry and swollen an i always get nose bleeds.

but when the weather is good, it is really good.  it was downright disgustingly pleasent from oct to the first week of dec.  and this month is turning out pretty nice too.

not sure what city you are from but as far as conjestion is concerned.......considering houston.....this is cake.  it used to take me 30 min to get to the mall much less across town.  this town is going through some serious growin pains right now and need to look a little harder at some other big city public works set ups: i.e. traffic light timing, public works, road construction.    they tried to introduce metered entrance ramps and HOV lanes.............in the same entrance ramps!!!  total disaster.  people don't know how to use stop signs around here either.  it boggles the mind.  if you were the first one to stop..........THEN YOU GO FIRST YOU MORON.   and the left turn red-light running is OUT OF CONTROL.  today, i saw 5, yeah, that's right, FIVE people run a turn light that was green for me.................IN FRONT OF A COP THAT DID NOTHING!!!!!!

and the housing, be prepared for MAJOR sticker shock from FL.  i am in a 1100 sqft  new house.  it's basically a 2 bdrm apptment w/o sharing walls, a back yard that is smaller than most putting greens and i can get my truck in the street and the garage at the same time.  wanna guess at the price..........................
higher..................................
$300k..................no shitte
i only have another 7 months so i rent for 900, totally worth it.

aside from that, it's fun out here.  and.... you can swing a dead cat and hit a hot chick.  and i am not just talking about the random secretary...........they are everywhere, super hot.

you really should come out here first though and get off the strip.

good luck
