When my family used to drive through there once or twice a year when I was young, I remember my brothers and sisters and I all called it "port-o-potty town" because the whole town smelled like a port-o-potty.

No offense to anyone who lives there. That was many years ago, it could be much nicer now.

Anyways, you wanted to know, and I told you everything I know.

Any town can be $hit-hole... just wondering... haven't had the time to explore Nevada much, as i'm native Californian.... living in southern Nevada

It is a nice place that still has "that small town charm" and if you are into the outdoors it offers some great surroundings, S.E. of Elko is Lamoille Canyon which is part of the Ruby Mtn. Range and is probably the most beautiful place I have been to in Nevada.

I have been around the Ruby's a bit and through Elko.  It seemed like a place I would not mind living in.  There are great outdoor opportunities close by and nice people.  I like to do lots of outdoor stuff and the place smells a lot better than most of Vegas which is where I reside now.  I would like to know more about the local Elko economy.  I am interested in other peoples replys.

Elko is cooler then hell. Its one of the biggest towns up north and has everything you could want that way. Good hunting and fishing. Nice town.

I used to feel kinda stuck here, but it's grown on me in the last six years.  I travel on days off.  Reno and the Bay area mostly.  Usually after a long trip to one of those places, it's a relief to get back here.  

No traffic.  Drive ten minutes and shoot wherever you want.  Lamoille is nice, was just up there yesterday fishing.  Housing is still somewhat reasonable.  Four seasons.  Winter can be cold, but I like it.  SLC, Reno, Twin Falls and Boise Idaho are all kinda close(300 mi.)  We have a decent community college that offers a couple Bachelor's programs, and they try to bring some culture out here, theatre, music, art and such.  There's that cowboy poetry thing, which I think is the ghey, but to each their own.  We have a "Biker Jamboree" every summer, which I usually don't participate in, but again, to each...

What else can I tell you?  It's a small town that has really grown over the last 10 years.  Gold rush.  It's on I-80 and a rail line, which I think makes it extremely attractive to business.  We have an airport.  Skywest and some new airline out of Vegas fly here, and our very own "Casino Express".  It's an old ranching town that didn't expect to get this big.

Swervedriver = All time favorite band.  Sorry if you were hoping it had something to with flying/driving for a living, or that I'm a bad driver.  Or, had something to do with golf.   Always thought it was a great band name, and it's a nice combination of words that sound like something else.

Housing:  would you like a 1800 sq/ft 3 bed/2 bath on 2.5 acres for $160K ?  Thats kinda median, and the acreage would be in Spring Creek, which is kinda a bedroom community just over the hill from Elko.  Stick-builts, in-town, in the desirable school locale, on average sized, tract lots, are going for the same.  There are still some deals, but they're becoming scarce.  Not too much new being built in town right now, though, I've heard that there's a new subdivision starting next spring.  Rentals?  Good luck right now.

Economy:  Our WalMart just became, "Super".  Our Home Depot opens at the end of the month.  We're getting some sort of chain restaurant from Salt Lake very soon.  These things have all happened in the last year.  Right now, the gold mines are the biggest source of jobs.  Either you work at one, or you work for someone that supplies/services them.  The local paper is always alluding that some major business is looking at Elko.  I don't know if this is 100% true, but Amazon wanted to build here, and ended up not doing it because of some tax argument with the city.  Fernley, Nv. got it.  I'm not an economist, but I think the future is bright for Elko.

Keep the questions coming.  If I can't answer, I'll try to steer ya in the right direction.

Where are you? Just curious.  

Life of mine:  Presently, the mine I work at is saying 2015.  There's a lot of crap that goes into that number, and the price of gold is a major factor.  Gold closed on Friday at $436.90/oz.  That's hella better than this time last year.  I have absolutely no business speculating gold, but I can tell you this: If gold goes up, or even remains at this level, there's more gold than 2015 to mine.  I have friends in exploration, and their phone is ringing off the hook.  They're turning down work.  There's a shortage of drillers and experienced miners right now.  Our local papers' want adds, recently, have stuff for other mining companies, all over the world and in Nevada.

Just my take.  Kitco.com is a good source for mining related stuff.

i live in fallon and the mine rawhide out in dixie valley is closing in like 3 years i belive. i also have a family friend i think hes in round or battle mountain and hsi mine just closed and hes worked there for like 25 years. good to hear you guys are going strong, mining is ungodly important to our economy.

Thanks for the reply.  Just looking for options OTHER then Las Vegas.  It's alright here, but I really like the outdoors, self contained, kinda thing.   Small towns are becoming less and less nowadays...  

Beck:  Fallons' cool.  Sand Mtn. Stillwater Marsh.  Navy planes.  Got a buddy from there, works out here.  Battle Mtn is picking up again, as well a Winnemucca area.  If your friend's at Round Mtn, those guys are going strong.  Visible gold, high grade deposit.  They'll be there for a while.  

Mr originator:  Come on up.  Spend a weekend or more, check it out.  If you want outdoors and independent living, Elko has it.  There's other places up here that are just as nice as Lamoille.  We just don't tell ya'll about it.  I bet Beck knows about some of those places.

I lived in Elko/Spring Creek for 14 years before moving 100 miles south to where I am now in Eureka.  It is a nice place to live that has quite a few opportunites for outdoors relatively close.  Most of the people are nice, and there is quite a bit of variety in the events that take place every year, though not enough to drive a person crazy, and not so much you can't experience most of it without wearing yourself out.  Everything you need is right in town, though it is good to get to one of the bigger cities like Reno, Twin, or SLC every now and again.  I still try to make it to Elko whenever I can, because Eureka can drive a single person nuts, lol.  You can water ski at South Fork (did that last weekend), hike to one of the lakes in the Rubies in the afternoon, and still be back in town for a late night show at the cinema.  Then you have Jarbidge, Wildhorse, and there are practically no rules outside the city limits as far as shooting is concerned.  There is a lot of public land once you get North or South any distance.  Deer and elk hunting is quite good, providing you can draw a tag.  Jobs are booming quite well.  My dad works for Barrick and has an MSHA business.  The roaster at Barrick has enough ore stockpiled to refine for 12 more years at least, and thats if they quit mining any more today.  The paper is loaded with ads for jobs that are related to mining/exploration.  I think I paid $475 month for a 2 bedroom appartment last year.  Not sure what it is now, but still not bad if you can find a place to rent at all.  Well, sorry for the longwinded response, but I am sure I can tell some more.  I want to get back up there as soon as I can when a job opens up at the PD or SO.
