Searched for and found John C. Fremonts "Long Camp" just before passing over the mountain into calif. We would have never found it with out the use of a GPS. they stayed 10 days at Long Camp...the longest of any camp. This was in 1844. There horses were kept down by Markleeville because of more grass being available. The main camp is on top of a hill (glacial morain)
about 3 miles from Red Lake. The snow was 10 feet deep in the middle of febuary 1844 and they burned 2 huge tress to get down to dirt to camp on. The camp is in a small swale that semi protected them. Also a few photos of the carson river in Hope valley.

The site location of Fremont's camp used for 10 days during his 1844 winter crossing of the
Sierra Nevada. With him were Kit Carson, Tom "Broken Hand" Fitzpatrick, Alex Godey; in all,
30 men and 56 horses and mules.

Hey Bob, a guy wrote a book about "Long Camp" and was the guy who found it. He told the coordinates in his book, plus you can find them on the net. Its a Geocache place they call it.  The GPS we were using was catching about 8 sattelites at once so we were within a 15 foot radius of the camp. Also reading the discriptiion on the net we were right on ther exact spot. Thats how we found a few places in the White Pine County trip. Also Bob most maps and atlas's have the GPS cord. on the maps so you can tell pretty much where you are. almost any place worth going you can find the GPS coord. to it....sure helps in the mountains and boon docks. We would have probably not found the spot without the GPS even tho after we found it its a pretty simple place to get to.
