I apologize for calling your home a shithole. Me and Vegas don't really agree with each otherr, but it was an overstatement. My experience there is limited to downtown and Henderson, so I know not of what I speak.

PS, I still hate tourists.

I wouldn't worry to much about it Jack, just next time you come just let us know in advance and we'll all go out and show you around. It's amazing how many people never see any of the natural stuff in the valley like Red Rock or Valley of Fire...quite beautiful. Ghosttowns a plenty just a short drive away too.

I was out at red rock about two years ago with my uncle...fucking awesome! Last time I was just passing through on my way to Green Valley via Phoenix.

I dunno, maybe I just ain't a city person

My wife and I visit LV every year in the spring during the convention season. We have done red rock (twice) and valley of fire(beautiful). Last time we went up into the mountains and really enjoyed it.   We have done Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam twice including the steamboat ride.

We are not very interested in the casino's so where are these ghost towns?

Bob

I posted one of my trips to Delamar ghost town a few months ago. There are lots of them just an hour or two outside of Vegas. There are old abandoned mines that date back to the late 1800's and a bunch of stuff to see. Next time consider taking a drive to the front gate of Area 51....that is pretty cool to do.

I remember when you posted the pics from that trip, WP. They were very cool... Most people don't know the rich history of Nevada, nor do they know that the desert is not just a barren land mass. There is a complete eco system that sustains adapted life very well. Often times tourists die less than a mile from the blacktop, because they travel into the desert in the middle of July, with one or two liters of  hydration and they get stuck or run out of gas. Although that is unforttunate, it all stems from lack a of knowledge and respect for the desert.

I guess ya just need to live here to respect ol' Mother Nature....

Reminds me of something from Dr. Strangelove:Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb.

ETA:Survival kit contents check. In them you'll find: one forty-five caliber automatic; two boxes of ammunition; four days' concentrated emergency rations; one drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine, vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills; one miniature combination Russian phrase book and Bible; one hundred dollars in rubles; one hundred dollars in gold; nine packs of chewing gum; one issue of prophylactics; three lipsticks; three pair of nylon stockings. Shoot, a fella' could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff.

Thanks, WP, for remindin' me about DELAMAR......ain't been there for a few years. In it's heyday, it contained 70K-80K people.....3 newspapers, several hospitals.  Only way in used to be by twice-weekly mule trains....so local stories say. Ain't NUTHIN' there now; maybe a wall or two, many holes in the ground, and a GREAT view north from the hills. 4x4 a must to get up close and personal. And "Rainbow Canyon", right next door down the hill is SOOOO gorgeous!! RR tracks through the hills and houses on stilts, wandering cattle, etc.......used to love that place(GREAT photography!!)

Citizen, there is actually quite a few remaining buildings at Delamar, one is two story. I've seen people on the 'net say it would take a few days to totally explore it as it is really huge. The ghost town of Helene is right next to it and both have a cemetary....I never saw those but I want to....maybe we NV forum guys should all get together one Saturday and caravan to Delamar and check it out.

I think that is an outstanding idea, Wolfpack.

Everyone in WA does not think like CJ.  I had one helluva time in Vega$ last week/weekend. Offhand the best time I have had in years!!!!

Limo, Tall stiff purrfect Drink, 6 hot women and my drunk ass. I got home the next day. Man what a weekend!!!!

If CJ ever shows up at one of our functions, I will bitch slap him around for ya.

If you guys give a fella enough leadtime, I may come back just for a trip out to a rural ghost town, sounds cool as hell.

Wolfpack-
Although the trail sounds similar, I don't remember all that stuff there.....just a hillside with many mining holes in the ground. Piles of discolored extraction remains, and a few foundation walls. Oh yea, one overturned rusting ancient car.....and NOTHING but a great plain; as far as the horizon.
Maybe two different places???? In any case, Rainbow canyon is a treasure, and some views are desolately spectacular. My last visit was to record images for a calender, but the damn lab ruined the film. I'll never forgive them.....and I'm up for a visit to either of our two (?) places. Just let me know when........('bout 3-4 hours driving, IIRC)

Downtown is a crap hole.  I've been here for about twelve years and absolutely hate playing tour guide for visiting relatives or friends.  You have to get out into the surrounding area to really enjoy Nevada. It is awesome.
