DRT is running our Defensive Handgun 1 class June 12 at a private range in Elizabeth (about an hour from Denver).  Below is the course description & link to the registration flyer.  This would be a very good class for someone looking to expand on a basic skill level & get some solid range time on the drawstroke, reloads, malfunction clearance, shooting on the move & use of cover.  The classroom portion covers the 4 points of Ayoob's Priorities- Mindset, Tactics, Skill, Equipment with an emphasis on the application of those for a CCW permit holder.

This would be a good base/warmup/refresher class prior to Andy Stanford coming out 25-27 June for the Tactical Dynamics & Tactical Carbine classes & SouthNarc who is going to be here 1-3 Oct for ECQC & PUC

DH-1 covers the fundamentals of using a handgun to defend yourself in a violent encounter.  This is an entry level class that will get you up to speed & comfortable with manipulating & shooting your pistol in a variety of situations & positions.  Shooting will be done from 0 to 10 yards with a focus on concealed-carry skill development & balancing the need for precision with speed.

   * Mindset considerations
   * Weapon & gear selection
   * 4-count drawstroke process & application
   * Weapon manipulations
   * Clearing weapon malfunctions- fail to fire & eject, double feed
   * Reloading
   * Challenge positions
   * Use of cover & concealment
   * DH-1 assessment

Please come to class with a tested & functioning weapon if at all possible.  Your weapon should reliably function with your training ammo & magazines.  We will induce plenty of malfunctions for you during class.  Likewise, wearing your gear & moving around with your weapon will help you establish comfortable, functional placements for your carry gear.  This will save you time & frustration on the range.  The recommended ammo quantity is a reasonable maximum expectation.  If you tend to shoot more or jump in on drills if space allows you may need more.  If you’re judicious with your shooting you can get by with less but you will not get the maximum benefit of the class.

You are responsible for informing the instructors of any condition that might interfere with your ability to perform some of the class drills.  We will do whatever we can to accommodate as wide a range of students as possible but the more notice we have the better prepared we can be.  You are also responsible for brining any medical devices or medications that you might need during class.

We shoot rain, snow or shine so come prepared.  The weather in Colorado can be very unpredictable- overpack to be on the safe side.  There are no refunds for lack of student preparation.

DH-1 Gear:

   * Eye protection
   * Ear protection
   * Functional pistol
   * 250-300 Rounds quality ammo
   * 3 Pistol mags (minimum- more is better)
   * Spare pistol (if you have one)
   * Functional concealed carry or duty gear (gun belt, holster, mag carriers, etc)
   * Ability to carry 3 pistol mags (belt pouches/pockets)
   * Spare batteries for lights, etc
   * Personal medical kit including OTC pain meds, bandages, tape, etc
   * Any personal prescription medications you may need
   * Water- 1 gallon or more per class day
   * Snacks & lunch
   * Hat
   * Gloves
   * Sturdy shoes/boots
   * Rain/cold weather gear

Is the class specifically geared towards concealed carry, or would a drop leg holster be alright?

While the class is designed to deal with the concealed carry problem the meat of the procedures will cross over regardless of the gear setup.  A drop leg, plate carrier mount, or whatever else you have would be welcome as long as it's a safe setup.  And yes, we do consider AIWB to be a safe setup.
