I will be heading to Colorado on the 9th of June for my honeymoon and I would like your guys suggestions on places to go/see...  We will be leaving from Omaha, NE and will be spending about 5 days in all.  What do you think?  

We hope to see Estes Park, Garden of the Gods, and maybe Colorado Springs.  Where else should we go?

Those are all great places to see.  I dont even live in the springs, but there's alot of stuff to see down there.  Check out Cave of the winds, and 7 falls also while you're in town.  Coors brewing is neat to tour if you make it out to Golden.

I dont know how far into the mountains you're planning to go, but there are some neat touristy things to see/do in Glenwood Springs, alot of history up there.

Check out the U.S. Air Force Academy. They used to have the place open for visits, though that may not be the case with the current international situation. A very nice place to tour if you can get in.

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is nice. It sits on top of NORAD, which also was open to limited tours. Might still be.

Glenwood Springs is about 2½-3hrs west of Denver on I-70. It is a nice town. There is a very nice cave complex open for tours and you can always visit Doc. Holliday's grave. I would consider Glenwood more as a base to visit the local area than as a final destination, though. A great jumping off place to high country areas. For example, the marble mine where the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is only about an hour away, and beautiful scenery the whole trip.

Nope, metro area (Aurora).  But not much to see around here.  Where are you located?

03Mav ~   There's also Black Hawk (casinos), It's nowhere near anything like Vegas, but fun for an afternoon or so.  June I think might be getting close to white water rafting, Salida/Buena Vista has rafting trips.

US Air Force Academy.  (Not open to public when condition is Orange).

Cripple Creek (for gambling).
NORAD tours require EXTREME advanced notice and a low threatcon (forget that idea for now).

Glenwood Springs does have Colorado River white water rafting, as well.

I live just west of Glenwood.

You'd be talking about the Yule Marble Quarry.  The "Tomb of the Unknowns" is just one of the many monuments from this location.  Did you know the original Tomb has a crack in it?  Sierra Minerals has been extracting the new block for awhile now.  I believe it is currently being carved and should be dedicated in September.

Do you know where Doc shot his last man?  Come to Leadville, home of the famous and infamous.

Are you sure they have extracted a new block? I haven't heard that. The guy who used to own the local Chevy dealership is paying for the new block out of his own pocket and donating it to the govt in order to guarentee the Yule Mine can supply the block, as a matter of tradition. Usually anything concerning the matter gets a good write-up in the Glenwood paper.

And SRM is right. Leadville would be a place to visit as well.

The "Yule mine" is that the name of the one in Marble, CO ?  I was there before they reopened it... impressive place back when.


I was up in RMNP (Rocky Mountain National Park) this weekend.  I took the GF up there on Trail Ridge Road.  VERY NICE drive.  $15 for a 7 day pass.  Lots of excellent views, animals (we saw Elk, Marmots, Pika to name the more interesting ones)  (oh, this is just outside of Estes Park)
