If you call the police without "merit" the "victim" can sue you for damages plus $250.

Summoning police without cause? Victims could sue under proposed Washington law

My first take was negative, but actually on reflection, gun owners might be able to use this due to the wording?

Infringe  on  the  other  person's  rights  under  the  Washington state or United States Constitutions

Good luck getting a WA judge to support that though.

One could only hope.

Guaranteed if you describe the perp as a POC under this bill, it starts the wheels in motion out of your favor, regardless of the legitimacy of the suspected crime.

If a person calls the police on a white person, too bad.

Do not call the police on a person of color though.

"Merit" will be defined in a nebulous manner to afford subjective interpretation for purposes of taking political license with its application.

Master_Blaster is absolutely correct....the definition of "merit" will be the key to how this would be used, and/or enforced.  If the definition of "merit" is too loosely defined, the law would be fairly useless, OTOH, if "merit" is too specifically defined, it could also make the law useless.

One judge may say calling the police regarding anything to do with firearms or right wing politics has merit, while another judge would rule the opposite.  One judge would say that anything to do with mental health issues, politics, substance abuse, or misdemeanor crimes is without "merit" while another judge would rule the opposite way.  Hence the key to the entire thing would be the definitions in the law.

It also has to do with the amount of "swatting," calling the police claiming a major crime is going on at the victims house. A couple video game companies in the area.... someone has an account banned, they get pissed... it's happened quite a bit around here.
