Both could be 4 10s planned vehicle MPG, maintenance costs, etc..... I'm currently commuting to Seatac and I used to commute to Kent and Tacoma. Without my 35+ mpg car with cheap parts, both would have been one step forward and two steps back. With your Blazer, I'd think maybe the "cost effective" job might have a larger margin. And I dunno what your time is worth to you, but you're really looking at 4 13s or 4 11s. Spread your pay over that and then what do you think? |

I also live 35+ miles from most any job that's availible....but it's a "sacrifice" that has huge benefits to me. I live in a rural community, it's a small town so anything out of ordinary sticks out. It's also a min of 19 miles to a bigbox grocery store which means planning in advance. It also means having a loaded up pantry is a norm, and not an effort. I have a half dozen places to shoot, without concerns of being harrassed, I can hunt on over 2,000 acres of farmland with a call to any of a dozen owners....I've got chickens in theyard, and my turkeys roam the town with no complaints to date. Yeah, my 35+ mile commute is worth it and a good trade off, now....if I didn'thave those bennies AND it was 35 miles in the I-5 corridor or an of that fucked up Seattle-Metro traffic....Fugghedaboutit. |

This, I've done it, but then you have to do the math on the lease income and relocation rental cost. If lease income is equal or higher than relocation rental cost, then go for it. As someone who has put up with a similar commute for 4 years now, I say go for the higher pay. However, do the math for the commuting. I found that the gas my truck was using was more expensive than the payment on a Chevy Impala + gas.

You will note that when it comes to your estimated alcohol consumption, the number 106 is never factored in

Didn't catch a further explanation in other threads, but I'll add; if this is a "promotion" take it, even if it balances out neutral, your next raise/promotion will be based on the new salary. I took a "promotion" last year, and am driving to Tacoma from south Everett. Even though there was a raise involved, I don't see any take-home due to driving the zed sled down there every day (180miles round trip
 ). But, the position and opportunities that I am now in line for, way more than make up for it.
If you wont take home any more money, factoring in all the shit from other post (I get free oil changes for life, get one every 2 months or so), and you aren't set up for something bigger down the line, fuck it. I hate my life now, but am foccused on the light at the end of the tunnel. |

My commute is 30 each way, truck gas got expensive, so I bought a $5,000 Volvo that gets twice the mileage. I paid cash for the vehicle, and had recouped my investment in just under 3 years, including maintenance and insurance. Job was a $20,000 more per year, so it was worth it. Volvo had 133,000 miles when I got it, now has 213,000.
Get Sirius or a good stereo, as it makes the drive more bearable. |

I'd take the longer distance and more money... get your self a commuter car that is halfway comfortable with a decent stereo and you'll be set.. XM has really made my drive much better.
Heck.. since I bought my new car I've been averaging almost 400 miles a week  40mpg is nice

Mileage over a certain distance (25 IIRC) is beyond the threshold for a "normal work commute" and becomes tax deductible as an expense not reimbursed by your employer. Last year I think the mileage was .52/mi . Take the higher paying job and get an accountant and keep all your receipts and track you mileage, and take advantage of the deduction rather then doing your own taxes adn missing out on huge tax savings.
My previous jobs covered the 3 county area and as far as Utah this year, I plan on taking every possible deduction I can, mileage and airfare included.
