For the past couple weeks, I've been wandering around New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.  Aside from visiting family, the wife & I have been traveling around the region visiting various points of interest and partaking in the regional cuisine.  For those not in the know, this is where the best pizza in the world exists, end of story.
Anyway, this is going to be a torturous experience if you're still on dial-up.

Today's installment is a short one.  Here's Seaside, NJ!


You must pay admission to access most beaches in New Jersey.  Notable exceptions are Wildwood and Atlantic City.


































































































 
 

For Monday, I present Cape May, New Jersey.  The southernmost point of New Jersey was a strategic defense point of the Delaware Bay, the mouth of the Delaware River and the maritime entrance to Philadelphia in World War II.  As a result, much of the bay was mined and netted against German U-Boats.  As with many places on the East Coast, Cape May was host to some shore batteries and had some fire-control towers erected.  These towers stationed Navy Sailors and Coast Guardsmen as lookouts, spotters and firecontrolmen.  One of those towers still exists as a memorial to those men who helped defend our country in those times.



There is also a lighthouse that is open to the public and several miles of beaches to enjoy if you pay admission.

I've been to the Intrepid a few times and it's always a fantastic experience. Was the USS Growler (Submarine) still available for tours?

Seaside actually looked kinda nice the day you were there. Did you get a cheese steak at Midway? Pizza at Maruca's? At least some zeppole?

We're planning to spend a few weeks next summer with my family somewhere on Long Beach Island. Holy Shit, prices to rent a place on LBI are outrageous! Regardless, we are going, and I'm really looking forward to spending time at the beach. It'll be my wife's first time actually staying at the Shore, so we plan on doing lots of day trips to Cape May, Wildwood, and all the beautiful sites I remember.

Sometimes I really REALLY miss Jersey................

Here is USS Growler (SSG 577).  Commissioned for only six years (1958-1964), she was our fourth nuclear missile-capable submarine.  Advances in submarine and missile technology caused her hasty decommissioning.

After touring this boat, it reaffirmed my choice to go Surface Navy when I did.  All submarines I have been on are cramped and cozy.  Unfortunately, I haven't yet been on a modern (read: nuclear) submarine.
