A couple questions: Can I buy weapons in WA with my orders, or do I have to get a WA license. I'd hate to give up my Montana citizenship (have you seen the price of out of state hunting tags?) Also, how hard is it for a GI to get a Concealed Carry License, seeing as my MT  CCP isn't honored in WA.   I start Clearing Ft Sill on Friday!!!!!!! Can't wait to get there!

1.) Washington Concealed Pistol License (CPL)
2.) MIL ID (DD Form 2)
3.) New Jersey Driver's License

You should have no problem!

Then when I left Active Duty, I got me a WA DL and stayed my ass here.

Washington is a "Shall Issue" state for your CPL so there shouldn't be any problem getting your concealed pistol permit. Welcome to the people's Republic of Washington! Be sure to vote and vote often. Every vote counts no matter how many times you do it!

With valid active duty ID and maybe a copy of your orders first the first year.( I never needed the orders) you can buy guns no problem.  With no concealed permit you have a waiting period for handguns.  Getting a permit is no real problem.  You can keep your MT permit, license and tags on your car.  If you inform the seller of most purchases, you do not have to pay sales tax.(or you used to be able too)

What they said. I worked at a sporting goods store in Lakewood, and we couldn't accept a Military ID for NICS check; that's corporate policy. But it really wasn't a big deal: all we needed was a valid State-issued ID from any state in the Union. You should be okay in most situations, and a couple of the dealers around Ft. Lewis are pretty decent when it comes to military; sometimes they cut you deals.

Yeah no shit.  A store close to both a major Army post, and a fairly large Air Force base not accepting military ID's. A FEDERAL ID not accepted for a federal background check?!?

Isn't it federal law that all you need are your orders to the state that allow you to buy, or is it just that most states accept them instead of a state ID?  I know that the guns stores I frequented in Virginia accepted orders, but sometimes people assigned to the Pentagon had problems.  Sometimes the order said Virginia, other times they said DC.  They couldn't accept the ones that said DC and the SM had to get them reissued somehow.

Almost forgot, getting a non-resident CPL is pretty easy.  Just go to the City/County building in Tacoma, apply and pay your money after getting fingerprinted and all. It'll take up to 60 days I think is the limit for non-residents to get it in the mail.

Probably a STOOOOPID company policy...Its ok with the feds but appearantly these guys go above and beyond. I have never had a issue with Military ID and NICS checks...

Funny a guy came my today that bought a Nagant from Big-5 at the mall. He said they totally wrapped the gun up with paper and then proceded to used about half a roll of packing tape on the outside of it before putting it in a box which was taped shut. Then to top it off the manager carried it out to his truck before he could take possesion of it. I am sure there is nothing in the federal regs about this crap!!!

All sporting goods stores are trying to cover their butts. We also had to hand carry any firearm to the front of the store, until it was paid for and we had recorded transaction numbers on the 4473, as well as a couple other locations for store records. I'll bet some of you Ft. Lewis and McChord people have been to this store before: it's called GI Joe's in the Lakewood Towne Center. And before you get all riled up about a "stupid policy" I'd like to just remind you that all you needed is/was some kind of state issued ID (like you all don't have some kind of a driver's license issued by one of the 50 states) of some type or other. And, as a reminder, as far as a chain goes, they have some of the lowest firearm prices I have ever seen. As an employee, we were given a 20% dicount off all merchandise EXCEPT firearms. If they did that, they'd be selling them to us below cost, markup on the guns is about 15% or so. So, we only got 10%, which is the exact same discount any and all military personnel receive whenever they show their military ID at the registers. So, you have one small problem where you have to extract the other form of ID, but you still get the gun for about 5-8% over the store's cost. And the special order policy is pretty nice: We were willing to see about ordering just about any long gun you could think of. We even had the Armalite AR-50 in our ordering book from our supplier. So, please don't dismiss them or get too angry about one store policy. I admit it's pretty dumb, but if the ATF ever decided to do an audit, they would find/invent some problem with multiple 4473s, which would result in massive fines and a loss of the FFL privilege. They are just playing the game of CYA.

To the first, I agree, they all do the CYA bit.  But escorting a firearm out the store and refusing to accept an internationally recognized federal ID are two different things.


To the second part .... I actually have *no* state-issued identification. It's Federal (Mil ID) or County (CCW), that's it.  That means, GI Joes can enjoy not having my business, although it won't effect their bottom line, I'm sure.

I agree.  Not every state requires it's citizens to have and carry a picture ID, some people have lost theirs and aren't able to get home to get an actual replacement (when my wallet was stoeln, California only sent me a piece of paper with my description and a statement saying I'd lost my license and this was it. I had to go back to get an actual card.)
I can understand CYA, but there is sometimes a fine line between being smart, and being so smart that it's stupid.

Recent subject of mine, I can give you some quick pointers.


Bring your military orders, bring your valid state drivers license, your good to go. The FFL may want your WA address, in that case give him/her your barracks mailing address.

If you are getting stationed here in WA, you will have no issue getting a CPL and buying a firearm.  It's a piece of cake here.

Now if you were to go to Hawaii and get stationed there, u have 3 days to get you firearms registered with HPD, but how will they know it was your 3rd day since arrival?

So it's not that hard.  And none of them are registered with this state.

20-odd years ago I got a CPL in Tacoma using my on-post (barracks/mailroom box#) address.  
Of course, things have changed since then, but...  
If you're active duty a NICS check is pretty easy...
