Cabelas will pull in mass amounts of money, as well as draw more businesses to the area.  I can see why  Lacey would want them.

The Hawks Prairie area really is growing.  There's already been a major re-work of the roadway with some large retailers coming in.  Cabella's would be a great addition.

Sounds pretty sweet, but somehow I don't think that the taxidermy displays will go over in the Olympia area as well as they do in Nebraska.

I wouldn't characterize it as socialism, but capitalism at it's best.

Communities are fighting for Cabela's to come to their towns.  Making a financial sacrifice today to gain a benefit in the future would be considered and investment by many.  I can see the argument of keeping governments out of this type of investing, but I don't particularly buy into them.

I don't know what kind of tax revenues, especially as trickled down, 400 jobs would add over  the years, but I'd imagine that the number crunchers could easily justify the $30M.

If you require a government subsidy to operate, that's socialism. Re-allocating my tax dollars to fund a private venture is socialism. It simply isn't any more plain than that.

Thirty years ago, there was a Cabelas at Marvin Road. They were opposite the dump, on the north side of Marvin. Pretty funny if they come back to the same place. I guarantee it wasn't that fancy of a building back then.

This past Thanksgiving I stopped at the brand new one in Wheeling WV coming back from the War College. I made it all the way to the front door.

The part I find truly shady is .GOV is investing my dollars in an attempt to generate more tax dollars.    When did .GOV become a self-generating entity?  And where's the end of that train?  I naively believe .GOV is supposed to be a reflection of the community they serve, not a "controlling authority".  I'm with RyJones on this one.

CavVet-  I thought I read somewhere that Cabelas only intends for that policy to apply to guns being brought in for service, and not to concealed weapons.  I think it was over at thehighroad.org or thefiringline.

Believe me when I say that I understand your points of view, but I just don't agree.  Government subsidizes a portion of almost every aspect of our lives.  If we were a in a totally libertarian world, the roads and schools would also be paid for by private business.  I'd rather that they subsidize something that will be a benefit to the community instead of just funding another failing social program.

What I want or believe rarely has anything to do with what actually happens  .
That said, our form of government should only be supplying utilities or ventures in which the community has a need but there isn't a profit to be made (ie, street lights, sidewalks, sewage systems, etc...)  This has, of course, mutated beyond recognition.  Today, anything can be justified as a need and when combined with the power to tax, political power is derived - which gives the utility a life of its own.

Besides thinking that .GOV knows how to better invest money than the free market, I suspect the fallacy of subsidies is, when does it stop?  If the sole entity with the power to tax is allowed to invest with the goal of increasing taxes - how long does it take before it owns everything?  This would be the opposite of limited government.  I think this is how Marx figures capitalism leads to communism - tax'm till there's nothing left - an unfortunate byproduct of the system as it stands.  Of course, the government's best interest would be to cultivate the market and feed from it symbiotically, but power has been attached and guarantees the relationship will be parasitic.

+1 I've been to the one in KC and the one in Denver.  I wasn't packing on the Kansas trip. I asked at Denver about CCW. They said if you've got a valid permit your good to go. Same thing at the Bass Pro in Springfield, MO. They did ask me not to practice my quick draw while in the store at the Bass Pro
