Putting in a bracket out in the garage this morning adjacent to, but not really NEAR an outlet, and heard a "pop" and a quick fizzle. So far (fingers crossed) nothing has happened. I know ZERO about electricity, but hope I didn't screw something up. Maybe I should have consulted with my friend shown here. Bet he would know what happened.

Sounds like you grounded a hot wire. Did you take the screw or nail out that caused it?

RS....
It was a screw and no pun intended, but I didn't want to screw around with it. I hate messing with electricity. I left it as is.

Turn off the circut for the garage at the breaker box.  You will be able to remove the screw with no problem.

Adjacent implies wiring. Is this open or rock wall? That pop may have been a tripped breaker, if so don't reset it until you know why it tripped. If there's a short circuit you now have a fire hazard.

Thanks. I went and shut off the breaker, took the screw out and reset. All looks good for now.
Geez. What a boner that was. I had images of myself with an Albert Einstein "hairdo" glowing like I was from 3 mile island.

You're still not safe, now you need to track down the short.

Behind where you put the screw in the wall.

If you don't want a tight curl on them short hairs you might want to turn the breaker off before poking around in said screw hole.

That pop / fizzle noise at first may have been the short, like two wires getting bridge by the screw. Remove the screw and you still have some fused and melted wiring in your wall, which is still a hazard.

A future fire hazard for sure.  Good news is you should be able to repair the section of wire with some wire nuts.

Physiological effects of current density on the human body are shown in the table below. Contrary to popular belief, it is the current - not the voltage - level which is responsible for effects. According to Ohm's Law, of course, a certain voltage is required to cause the necessary currents to flow. Values show vary depending on the body.

Onset
Current
Level
(mA) Effect

1 Threshold of sensation
8 Mild sensation
10 Painful
13 Cannot let go
21 Muscular paralysis
20 Severe shock
38 Breathing labored
42 Breathing upset
70 Extreme breathing difficulties
90 Ventricular fibrillation
100 Death

You my want to use one of those stud detectors they sell in Sears, Home Depot, etc.  The good ones can detect wiring as well as studs.   I think they cost less than $100, maybe $50.    Cheapos are even less but not so precise.   It will save you this kind of problems in the future.    I neve drill my walls before "mapping" what's behind.
