I'm not sure what he would charge;
but I traded him 1 1/2 cords of firewood and to me that was a good deal because I am going to be moving and I was just going to leave that wood at my house rather than move it with me. |

Lynnwood Guns and Ammo will do a plain barrel thread for $40. Any brake removal may cost more.

I called a local respected 'smith to inquire about threading a barrel. He said it was $100 +FH because he had to break down weapon and take off the barrel extention. I was like "barrel extention"? He said, "Yeah, what the bolt goes into". He said something about some guys will just thread the end but it may not be concentric to the bore, but he takes it all apart to make sure it is concentric.
WTF? Is this guy BSing me or what? |

The Russian guy at the Monroe show (the AK specialist) was threading barrels right there at the show. I don't know if he was doing it for customers or if they were his personal rifles but he had a special barrel fitting that the die unscrewed from that kept everything straight. Did a real nice job and only took about 5 minutes.

Part BS part true, it is rare but I have seen barrels where the rifle bore was not centered in the barrel so if you dial in the barrel with an indicater the barrel will be centered but not necessarily the bore, when doing critical boring jobs I like to make sure the bore is centered. |

I only saw him do an AK so I don't know if he had the dies for an AR. He was talking with some guy the whole time so I never got to ask him how much he was charging or if it was just his own personal weapon.

Unless you have the worlds skinniest AR barrel, the muzzle has to be turned to .5" OD before you start, you can't just thread it with a die.  I'm betting for the AKs he was taking off the muzzle nut and just using the die to chase the existing threads. |

He prolly means the "Russian AK Guy" that Ghassan is partnered next too at Puyallup all the time. He does Monroe from time to time. I'm not much of an AK guy so I dont know his name, wheras Ive done a couepl deals with Ghassan, hes a pretty decent guy.

Yep. No bore is perfectly concentric with the exterior of same for its entire length. Best you can do it dial in the muzzle for some length. After an AR barrel is rifled there is a short section at the rear turned to concentricity with the bore. That short section becomes the index point for the rest of the barrel. Hence, all sections of the exterior are theoretically concentric with the bore. The threads at the rear are cut first then that section is clamped and used to index the rest of the barrel. Take it to the gun shop at OAI, if you're lucky they can get it done in a day. ETA, apologies for stepping on your post Ubermensch. Is there anything 88 about your handle? |

I gave James another AR barrel to thread for me today, and I asked him about differnet prices. He said $55.00 for a plain barrel AR, no receivers. Or $75.00 for a barrel with a upper receiver still on. These prices are for barrels with a plain muzzle. Removing permanent installed muzzle brakes, would be extra. And front sight base does not need to be removed. |
