FT Dix public range only goes to 200yds

We shoot 1000 yd at the Pa Rifle and Pistol State Association Range in Reade twp.  Problem is that it is out near State College.  3.5 hrs from Phila area.  There is also the Bodines range up in Williamsport.  They shoot 1000 bench rest and 50 Cal up there but I am not sure of the particulars.  I have gone up for the 1K NRA prone matches and it is a solid 4 hour drive.

There is a 1000 yd range in the works down in Deleware.  Bridgeville De has a full course NRA High Power range (600 yds with pits).  They are in the process of building a full 1000 yd range with pits.  The hope is to be able to run 1000 yd NRA prone and any sight matches as well as Palma.  I am sure there will be F class usage as well as BR.  That range is only about 2 hours away from the Phila area.

Aside from that there are not many choices unless one drives up to Albany NY to shoot at the Forbes range, or goes down to shoot the many LR and Palma Matches at Quantico or Camp Perry in Ohio.  All those are huge drives and require lots of time to get to.

Peeltree WV also has built a new facility with a standard National Match course range as well as 1K.  Sadly it is 5-6 hours away.

There is a rumor, and it is only a rumor that Ft Indian Town Gap is gonna open up a KD range to accomodate the Marine corps.  The rumor is that a KD range with pits will end up being open for civilian matches for NMC, and hopefully a 1K range.  I think it is simply a rumor and nothing more yet, but that would be a reasonably close range.  And it was not long ago, maybe the early 90's when we still shot National Match course at the GAP.  I was just a kid, but I do miss competing there.


Recreational (plinking and such) is simply not an option at any of the 1K ranges I know of.

Sadly to shoot at 1K requires a little driving.  I am so used to closing up the shop on a Saturday at 4pm, hoping in my truck, driving for 4 to 8 hours only to sleep in the back of my truck, or sometimes underneath it, only to wake up at 6am to shoot a regional or some other match, then drive home that evening and pull in at some un-godly time of night, that a 3 hour drive is kinda local :)

I was trying to find some un-reclaimed strip mine around rt 61 to buy cheap and build a full 1K Palma range.  It is tough to find cheap land, that faces kinda north, with a safe fan area, and a decent natural backstop(mountain), that is reasonably level, within a couple hours of Phila.  That could accomodate a large number of shooters, and still be rural.  Just not very feasable it would seem anywhere near us :(

I have heard theres a 1K range somewhere in/or above Williamsport. Not sure if you have to be a member or not. Will have to wait til I can get more info.

They used to go to 600 Mike but new construction homes and the township forced them to shut it down.....no way they'll be able to expand it again.

Back when I was a kid Water & Wings was called Twin S&S and it was a GREAT gun club!  They used to have a 1000 yd range there.

I have a killer head cold and once it started to rain it got worse. If I feel better tomorrow I will be there. How was it?

I got there around 11:00am.  Most all the benchs were occupied.  The most people I've seen there ever.  All in all a good turnout considering the weather.  Guess I'll have to wait to see the SPR.
