Have her download Gaia GPS on her phone and select all the AZ Forest and USGS  maps.   Not free but awesome.

Or go into the Apple App Store and install Avenza maps and the USFS MVUMs are free and very good.

Both 25x better than Delorme for backcountry travel.  

Both will work without cell signal.

I think maybe you are just misremembering the way you drove to Crown King?

The Castle Creek Wilderness was designated in 1984 and there weren't any drivable routes there prior, its mostly vertical.
