There will be a 3 Gun Match this Sunday at the Pima Pistol Club in Tucson.  The match usually starts at 9AM.

last time it was $20 for non club members....depending on how many people shoot there are cash pay backs to the winners.

There are always 4-5 seperate stages (courses of fire) on different bays...you shoot each stage once for score.  Once everyone has finished shooting for score, people often shoot the stages for fun.

It was good seeing Intel6, Biggame223, and Van462 there....next time I'll try to get down there earlier so we can all get on the same squad.

I finished 2nd in Open class (out of 3), and 3rd over all out of 31.

There was lots of shotgun shooting this time.  3 stages used the shotgun, 1 shotgun only with bird shot targets, and slug targets at ~75 yards, another shotgun only steel targets with shot only, and another shotgun pistol combo stage.  One of the shotgun stages doubled as a pistol stage, same course of fire, just use your pistol instead.  

The long range rifle stage killed most people's scores.  It required engaging and resetting a tombstone tactical target twice at ~90 yards, and 2 large steel plates at 200 yards from 3 positions (left side of the barricade, under the barricade and right side).  I was one of 4 people to complete the stage out of the 31 shooters at the match....didn't take me too many extra shots once I figured out where to hold on the plates with my CQT.

Out of curiosity, at a couple of training classes, we were told to NOT allow our weapon to move past the opening in teh barricade, or around the SIDE of a barricade, since this would reveal our position and also allow someone to grab the barrel and pull the weapon away from us.

why are you guys sticking your weapons through the holes in the barricades?  Rules?  Safety?  Not paying attention?

1) to make sure I don't shoot the barricade

2) there was a large array of targets on the other side including a spinning "death star"...sticking through the port made it easier to shoot.

3) I'd say the act of shooting itself reveals your position with muzzle blast and one of the bad guys' friends going down

We did have slings.  Several transition drills.  From failures in Carbine to out of Ammo for carbine.  

I learned quite a bit.

I appreciate the concept of not crowding cover, TJ and a lot of other schools teach this and it has it's place.

Realistically though I can't think of a situation I'd be firing through a 6x6" port at multiple targets that are 8" in diameter, most of which are at ground level.  Depending on the course design, some stages can be made to reward sound tactics, others emphasize shooting skills more.

You can get out of matches what you put into them.  If its realistic, then do it.  I try to do things like reload behind cover, make effective use of cover when I can.  I actively scan for targets.

Honeslty the way I shoot is the most anti-competitive way to do it, I'm there to have fun, do some shooting training, and T&E the gear I use/we sell....it's more of a vindication when I place high at a match like this for all the shit I catch for the equipment I use.  One of the guys I beat I know for a fact is a better shooter than me, but he had one of his guns fail on him badly on one stage.

slings at matches more often than not just get in the way as you need to ground your long gun when transitioning.

I will be using a sling, at our match at the Tiger valley range next week, as that match does allow propper transitions.

I'd say if you are looking to be purely competitive by all means build up a dedicated rifle for 3 gun.

If you're looking at it as practical training, stick with what you got and you will get better with it.  If you think you need magnification on your 3 gun rifle, it'd be a good idea to use it on your trunk gun as well.
