Congrats on the beautiful buck. The deer really seem to moving today after the front moved through. I laid eyes on three today between 7am and 9am and they were all "on a mission" (no hot does, they were all just cruising with a purpose). |

I had six bucks and five does all well within range tonight. More action than I've seen in a while. I was surprised considering the 30ish mph winds blowing here tonight.
Nothing came by I wanted to shoot, but it was still a good time. My son will be hunting next weekend for youth season so I'd love for him to have an active day like that too. |
|
I saw a small buck hanging around about 200yards away. He had his nose on the ground the entire time, didn't seem to care about anything else.
I got cold and had shit to do at home so I didn't hunt very long. I'm going to try to be out longer tomorrow. |

I punched my buck tag this morning. I got skunked in Vinton county last week (our yearly "deer camp" trip). Got this one at home. Certainly not a magnum like some in here, but I'm just filling freezers. Weather sucked today, but got it done (15+ mph winds and rain). He's a goofy 8. 5 + 3. Didn't even go 20 yards. Absolutely shredded both lungs. Now for a doe or two

I just hunted this morning. I saw five deer, including a small 8pt that busted me. Walked in right behind me, on the right side. I heard him, looked over, and he looked up at me at the same time. Shit. 15 yards at the worst possible angle to try to get a shot off. Oh well

Got permission for the two farms across the street.
Hurried to the farm he crossed over to about 45min before dark. It’s been raining/snowing since noon so there will be no blood trail anymore. I quickly walked it with a thermal and two eyes and didn’t see anything. I’ll be back tomorrow. |
|
That's great you got permission for retrieval. Hopefully we can see a good update tomorrow.

Quoted: We will see. My confidence is dwindling fast. The loss of a blood trail puts me way behind the curve and I’m sure the coyotes are feasting as I type this. Fuck this season. View Quote Know anyone with a tracking dog? I could bring my GSD… He’s pretty good with the “find it” game with toys, etc. Never tracked a deer but it’s worth a shot. Dead serious though I could probably throw my kid in the backpack carrier and come help you look tomorrow during the day if you want. |

Good luck ZW17, hoping for a good news update. I lost a big one last year and it still bugs me. 220 yard shot, aimed 9 in high with the .450 BM that was tuned in. All I found was white belly hair. Couldn’t figure out how I hit him so low. After CSI’ing every aspect found an old wire fence line that I hit and deflected it on me. Looked for him for a day with no luck. And he hasn’t been on any cams in the area this year.

Missed a doe Saturday morning, equipment issue. Haven't had a chance to track down my problem, but I'm betting its new string time. That's what I get for not checking zeros this season.

I shot a nice buck early this season and lost him as well. The shot was 42 yds right at dusk. I use the Illumenock bolts so I was able to see the hit (near perfect, maybe an inch low) and recovered the arrow. I waited about 20 minutes, it was starting to rain and with 2 days of rain forecasted I wanted to get busy. I went to where he entered the woods and there was blood everywhere. Ray Charles could have followed the blood trail. Tracked him in about 250 yds and he went into a heavy briar patch from logging a few years ago. I could smell him but there was no way I could get in there with the clothes I had on, plus it started pouring. I decided to come back in the morning. Called a friend to help and we were at the briar patch at first light dressed in proper briar gear. After 3 hours of crawling around in there and not finding a thing, we decided to start looking for blood around the patch. Finally found the spot where he had laid down right on the far edge of the thicket. The blood trail was long gone so we just walked around for another 3 hours and came up empty. Gave up and went home with a sick feeling. Two weeks later, I had him on the camera again!! Eating at the same feeder I shot him at. Sure was happy to see that. I never would have guessed he would have survived after the blood loss. Never saw him again. Someone else may have got him or he moved on.

Update:
No recovery, and I am crushed. That was a buck of a lifetime for me. After the snow/sleet/rain yesterday and the resulting melt, all signs of a blood trail were wiped out. My neighbor and I walked around for 3hrs tonight investigating all avenues from the last marked blood spot yesterday. We came up empty. I’m done with bow season. I plan on enjoying youth gun with two kids this year (one Sat, one Sun) and I’ll try to take something during gun or muzzy season. I’m frustrated with archery right now and I know I need to sling some arrows and become a better shot. My goal is to be a little less cocky about my abilities and to buckle down on my skills. Apparently what I have been doing isn’t working. Be humble, shoot straight. |

Earlier this year I was sitting on the side of a mountain about ready to giving up hunting because of a bull elk I couldn’t recover. My season ended up turning out ok I think. |

Punched my buck tag last weekend on that smaller 8 point. This morning, I set up a blind and food plot on some land I just got permission for to try and get a couple does. I got this from my cell cam a little bit ago

I just watched a video where a dude shot the same buck twice during archery on separate occasions and ended up finally killing it later in the year during gun season. They are way tougher than us, and hopefully he will give you another chance. |

Not seeing any of the big boys, I decided in the last minutes of daylight yesterday to put some meat in the freezer. Probably last year's deer. Should be nice n tender. Still have one tag in case I see something nice. But one from mid bow season and this one, I don't "need" another. Two 120# deer will hold me over. Heck, I might still have some burger from 2019. I got 3 that year. Bow, pistol and a 350 legend.
Good luck out there boys Attached File |

I want to try and get a doe this weekend while I'm off to get some more meat in the freezer. I also decided to get my 450 ready for gun season. First time painting a rifle, and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

I put one a half inch low of the bullseye at on a cold bore at 130yards with my 450 Bushmaster and remembered why bow hunting is stupid

Just got my new Savage 350 legend sighted in today. It's the 110 model that camera with a Vortex scope. I hung some paper at 100 yards and my first 3 shots weren't even on the paper. Moved up to 25 yards and my shots barely were on the right edge. Got it dialed in quick after that. Going to shoot it 2-3 more times this week and should be good to go.
