they got rid of 556 and handgun ammo a while back, but were still selling .22LR and shotgun ammo. But the ammo display cases at my local Walmart are gone now.

Yes, all Walmarts in California have stopped selling all ammunition. I believe they all stopped in about August of 2020. Before then, throughout the month of July, Walmart was clearancing any ammo they had left.  I heard rumors that Walmart sold anything they had left to Turner's.

The ones around me did but several nearby still had ammo.  I suspect it wasn't worth the hassle anymore for them and they dropped it at all of them.
