Hey all,

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this question! One of my friends is moving to the Socialist Republic of California and has a small collection of AR15s. He has a NIB LE6920 which he's always just held on to.

If he decides to store the rifle (long term, cosmoline, etc.) with no stock, muzzle device, pistol grip, magazine, or really anything besides the shell of the rifle with a BCG, is it considered an assault weapon needing to be registered? I'd imagine if that was the case he sure as hell wouldn't want to have any spare "assault weapon"

furniture laying around.

No telescoping stock, no dreaded "flash hider", no pistol grip, still an "assault weapon?"

I'm no expert but I believe if it has a detachable magazine it is required to be registered as an assault weapon. Removing the stock, grip and muzzle brake still leaves a detachable magazine.

He's going to need an AR maglock or something like it. The assault weapon registry is closed already so he won't be able to do a bullet button. No need for him to take any of the furniture or parts off if he does the AR mag lock

I believe the 6920 is banned by name in California, so he’d need a new stripped lower in addition to other compliance modifications.

I’d check with the experts on CalGuns.net.

Just split the upper and lower apart. They aren't considered an assault rifle because for all they know the upper might be used on a mag locked lower or the lower might be used with a .22lr upper.

I concur I'm pretty sure the 6920 is banned by name. The calguns featureless flow chart has a list of the guns banned by name. I'm pretty damn certain Colt SP and LE series are on that list.

If it wasn’t he could separate the upper and lower, and take the grip off the lower and be fine.

This question should go to GD side.

With that said, the same 'hypothetical' question rings true for me. If I have to move to that $h_t hole due to family reason I would probably switch over to semi auto shotgun. Yes capacity will be limited but 12 ga 00 and 1 oz slugs would serve just fine since I can load shells quicker than most average 'hunters'.

If it is a Colt and it is stamped as an "AR-15", it is banned from the State no matter the model number.

Of course, lower receivers are very inexpensive right now. You could bring the parts and store just the lower receiver (smaller, less risk during storage).

Check the list to see if it is banned by name. If it is not, easiest way to store it would be to install a 22 conversion for it. Rimfire is not regulated.

I did already check the list for the guy before making my post. What it says is, "COLT AR-15 (all)".

Rimfire magazines are also restricted to ten rounds or less, so be careful which magazines come with your rimfire conversion kit.

If he really REALLY cares, tell him to put it in a storage unit across state lines or store it with a friend or loved one.

He has my sympathies.

This quote shows the Colt 6920 is an assault weapon and cannot be imported: California Regulations

"§ 5499. California Penal Code Section 30510, Subdivision (f), Assault Weapons List. (a) Rifles ... Colt Law Enforcement (6920)

There are guns banned by name, others by features.

If it is banned by name, the receiver can't be brought in.

If it isn't banned by name, it can be brought in, but it can't have any "evil features" if it has a detachable magazine. Evil features includes flashhiders, folding/collapsing stocks, and pistol grips.

So for an AR15 rifle that ISN'T banned by name, removing the flash hider, giving it a fixed stock and giving it a fingrip (or equivalent) so that it doesn't meet the definition of "pistol grip" will render the rifle legal. No forward pistol grips either.
