I'll admit to not knowing a whole bunch about the BAR, but I do know that it is a magazine fed, non-pistol grip rifle. It seems to me that there should be more of them out there, why aren't they?

Expensive, rare, ammo is also more expensive, not enough modern accessories to accessorize it, just to name a few. Basically, you can do better with M1A or Mini-14, and probably cheaper too.

Did anyone here forget that the BAR also happens to weigh in at 24.5 pounds? That's as much as a .50 BMG rifle! It does reduce the recoil of the .30-06 ammunition it fires though.

There's a big difference between a M1918A2 BAR and a Browning BAR. One is a shoulder-fired full auto squad weapon (fires from open bolt) and the later is a semi-auto traditional looking hunting rifle.

Not bad. I'd be pretty nice to have a black semi in .300 or .338 Win Magnum. Now if only there were 20 round mags made before the ban, it'd be perfect. I've seen these for sale in Shotgun news for mid $600s. |

Aside from being over 3 times the weight of a basic AR15, the other problem is finding 10 rd mags. |

....nice for collectors........but since when has 30-06 ammo been rare?

I doubt it. It would make a pretty hard way to shoot it. But, if it really concerns you, get one without it... Oh, and 30-06 is FUN even in semi auto. Heard of "bump firing"

I've always wanted a complete collection of USGI WWII weapons, but the rarity of some, local laws, and the price has kept me from starting it. I must admit though, a BAR is one of the few rifles I would probably want to shoot more than I would like to physically own it.

Only reason I ask is because I want to put an A6 kit on my 1919 and I want to put the carry handle on the shroud. I don't want some pissant to fuck with me because of it. |

That's the thing, the M1A isn't cheap either. I would think that there are all sorts of parts sitting around, someone just has to make a semi-auto receiver. I don't really care about weight, I'm not going to be humping it through the brush. Well at least not yet...

CalGat: Ohio Ordinance makes a quality semi-auto version of the WWII BAR. They have a patten on the semi-auto design. I wanted to buy one about 10 years ago, but the cost was $2,500. Back then it was way too expensive for me, and is probably even more so today.
