There doesn't seem to be anything that would make it currently banworthy and I'm willing to bet there would certainly be buyers.  The barrel might have to lengthened a bit but that's about it.  Plus, cheap high cap preban mags that many people owened before 2000.

they were for sale in calif pre Y2K,  a pipe was welded over the barrel to meet the 16in minimum, they came in 9mm and 45acp.

but don't they operate from an open bolt and that's why very few are made, because they need custom work so they can fire from a closed bolt?

These guys make semi-auto stens in closed bolts. They even sold the complete kits (less the machining of the receiver tube) but they are sold out and have been for some time now.
