I went to the hardware store. I bought a fiber washer and steel acorn nut that fit around the threaded end of the magazine release.

Before inserting the magazine and release and installing the nut and washer to fix them in place, put BLUE thread lock over the threads.

Install, let sit until thread lock dries.

It is now a fixed magazine by both the spirit and letter of the law.

I have never taken apart the mag release, but from the way you describe it you can just use washers to keep it from moving and a nut to hold it in place of the button?

I have never taken apart the mag release, but from the way you describe it you can just use washers to keep it from moving and a nut to hold it in place of the button?

I put a washer on it to make a buffer between the nut and side of the receiver - I don't want to scratch anything (hence a fiber washer, not metal)

The nut is what, when bottomed out against the side of the receiver, keeps the magazine release from moving.
