Do you have to cut the grip flush with the trigger gaurd or can you cut it at the finger grove. Has any one done this and how does it feel ? I figure you could rest your fingers on the mag.

You can't have the grip on the lower at all without  a fixed 10 round mag. After SB23 became law there were a couple dealers selling AR's with the grip cut off and DOJ busted them.

It is likely these naive dealers got in trouble for selling "AR series" rifles, which don't require SB23 features to be assault weapons. This probably occurred before the Harrott ruling, which may have affected the outcome.

Assuming your receiver is a non-listed one, you don't have to cut the grip if you modify the receiver so as to remove the "detachable magazine" feature defined in regulation 978.20(a).
