Most of the time it's a long lingering drop from what passes as normal to dreading each and every day alive. I had a girlfriend as a kid who's alcoholic father would curse at her from morning to night, pistol whip her mother, and he was a bigot of the first degree on top of those charming qualities. That's the kind of stuff that makes a 15-17 year old girl begin to hate herself. She could put on a fake outside of enjoyment to match what the rest of us teenagers were doing but she really couldn't get to there from where she started out each day.

Like I wake up happy, she woke up sad. Drugs and alcohol are often an escape for these souls to get lost from their feelings - and nobody gets smarter on drugs.
