I am considering this rifle for target shooting/plinking. I've wanted an accurate sniper rifle setup but never had the dough for an M1A or Savage setup but I saw the Howa today and read lots of good things about it.

For mostly target shooting, do you guys suggest .223 or .308? I've never owned a rifle in either caliber. If I don't hunt, does it even matter?

i recommend 308.. reach out and touch someone.. 223 is cheaper  but windy days can ruin your day at the range.

Alot of people would say .308 because it's more "tactical" and standard. If you don't hunt, go with the .223 for the cost effectiveness of the ammo and bullet selection. Once you learn skills on the .223 they'll translate over to the .308 with some adjustment. You'll be able to shoot alot more, and get better, with a .223. I had a Howa 1500 in .308 and it was very accurate. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Howa 1500 in .223 if it had the right price tag.

.308 is the standard in precision shooting.


Most people won't ever take their rigs out past 100, maybe 200 yards, and are just punching paper. If that's the case, the .223 will serve you well. Also, if you plan on doing in prairie dogs or ground squirrels, the .223 will do the job just fine.

If you plan on taking it to 300+, or for larger game,  I suggest going with the .308, since the light weight projectile if the .223 is much more susceptible to wind.
