I stumbled upon this nugget while looking up state-to-state gun laws.  I thought, perhaps incorrectly, that CA does NOT allow Class-III for its subjects?

www.firearmslawcenter.org/content/masterlist.asp#Machineguns

Here's the snippet:

According to the ATF, in 2000 there were a total of 278,958 registered machine guns nationwide.  Department of the Treasury, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, Firearms Commerce in the United States: 2001/2002, Exhibit 9. The four states with the greatest number of machine guns were Texas (19,415), Connecticut (17,289), Florida (15,285), and California (14,916); those with the fewest were Delaware                   (146), Hawaii (246), Rhode Island (416) and North                     Dakota (1,019).  Id.

There are 14,916 registered MG's in this state?  LEO's only?  Kofi Anan's secret army?  What am I missing?

A lot in the Movie industry, and don't forget there are a whole poop-pot full of people here.  You get a fraction of the amount per capita as some states and that still is a bunch.

There used to be some firearms development companies that had a lot.

Doesnt this also include law enforcement?
I'd think that'd be the factor

The only other states that have more are those that allow private ownership

Probably movie industry and LE. That number has to be lower than it used to be since Stembridge gun rentals went out of business. They had thousands of movie guns, most of which were liquidated out of state.
