Sanchez Meat Market (caniceria) On Inglewood blvd. in Culver city. Also have a taqueria on Centinela Ave. They were just written up in one of the newspapers, either the Times or Daily Breeze, I can't remember.
Tamales I get at work. My employees are always making them for some extra cash. I either get Mexican tamales or El Salvadorian tamales pending whos making them. Lot of work and they still sell them for less than a buck a piece. |

I used to work at a market with a lady whose Uncle Larry ran a tortilla factory in Pasadena area and they would make fancyc Xmas tamales for restaurantes. She would bring them in by the bucket load for the Xmas Eve all day buffet at the market. We used to have these unbelievable potluck buffets the day before Thanksgiving and Xmas Eve because it was so busy. She had one batch of tamales that that were chicken and olives that were great, the second batch had unptitted olives. Nearly had a bunch of broken teeth on that batch. El Camino Real often has pineapple tamales on Saturdays and Sundays for dessert. OOhhh |

TITOS TACOS mmmmmmmmmmm good
is also just down the street from a gun shop, martin b rettings guns in culver city, there is always a line outside, about 20-30 min wait. www.titostacos.com theres another mexican food place thats real good in culver city called "el abajenos" i think, i think on inglewood ave. small place kinda hard to find, only been once but they got BIG burritos. another place near LAX on manchester blvd called Pacos Tacos cantina, the original paco tacos a few miles away burned down. they handmade fresh tortillas right next to the tables. i know the difference between the el salvadorian tameles but cant really explain it well, i personally dont like them that much. the ones ive had are wrapped in a green paper husk, its more of a wet and juicy filling (for lack of a better term), and i dont think the meat is shredded. sorry to the el salvadorians here for the bad description.

You guys like fish tacos? Rubio's has fish tacos on sale for $1 each. Wahoo's fish tacos are good too.
Super Mex has pretty good tamales. |

Wahoos tacos are OK, but they got that crappy yuppy rice and beans.
Hijack the thread a little, if you are ever in Barstow - Robertiros - out on West Main has a carnitas burrito that is worth a trip for. They have a California Combo burrito that is reportedly not too bad either. |

El Salvadorian tamales are a bit wetter. They are wrapped in banana leaves instead of corn husk. The ones I get have strips of chicken or pork in them along with strips of potatoes and green beans. Milder than Mexican tamales but still good. Sweet tamales are the best no matter who makes em!
Paco's is good but actually the original one is actually on Centinela in Mar Vista (Culver City area). The one that burned down was on Lincoln ave. Sucks because that was the one I used to frequent every week. The newest one on Manchester is very nice though and all the old staff went to work at that one. They have the best handmade tortillas around too! I think I'll have to go there this week now that we are talking about it. It sucks since I moved out of the area, we used to walk there and then walk back home drunk after downing a couple pitchers of margaritas! El abajenos, is right next door to Sanchez in CC. Rubio's and Wahoo's don't count, too commercial. |

I'm getting way to hungry! Now someone mentioned homemade tortillas! Both of my Grandmas passed away long ago, but I can still taste those homemade torts coming straight off of the "Comol." Little bit of butter...man!!! The good ol' Homemade Mexican food was so good that I could barely walk when I was done eating. And the Chile (salsa for you gringos) was so hot, but flavorful; you just couldn't stop. Now I'm hungry!
You guys have mentioned Taco places, but what are some good Mexican Restaurants in the greater L.A. area? Heck, the whole state; I travel statwide quite a bit. Thanks.

Paco's Tacos on Manchester blvd. near LAX is an awesome restaurant.
Alfredo's in Lomita on PCH serves up Yucatan peninsula style Mexican food. El Terasco's has a bunch of restaurants scattered around the southbay. Pretty basic but it'll do in a pinch. El Jacalito and Sonora Cantina, both in Big Bear are very good. I'll try and think of more later. |

Jilberto's on Highway 76 in Pauma Valley! Right at the T intersection where the Pauma reservation road goes up to the casino. Not much for atmosphere, but they've got great food and really, really reasonable prices. They always seem to have a crowd on weekends with a mix of those going to/from the desert, locals and folks who just stumbled on it (maybe after losing most of their money at the casino).

Great tips. I'll have to look for some of those places especially if they are near the airport. But I may make a trip to E. LA especially if the tamales are sold very early and you have to stand in line with people carrying aluminum pots.
I've had Rubio's. Originally in San Diego. I believe Rubio's makes a good safe fish taco. I miss their shredded beef taco. I remember El Cholo has green corn tamales certain times of the year. El Coyote's had green corn tamales more often. Tito's. I've been there too. There's a treat. Where else do you get purree'd salsa and 50 cent pieces in your change? I'll definately have to look up the new Paco's , Sanchez's, and may make it down to Lomita for that Alfredo's. |

If you are down in the Lomita-Harbor City area, check out Arturo's on the corner of Western and PCH. I haven't been there yet but every time I drive by the parking, lot it's packed, and more people are parking on the residential streets and walking. Must mean something! I don't know why I haven't gone yet, I only live .5 mile from it. [:\]

Spare me the gavatcho taco stands!
You want real taco's and your in L.A. got to Orozco's taco on Soto blvd. right where Soto crosses over the 10 frwy. No large bills because orozco will chew your ass out, you dont want chile, tough, thats how he makes them. The homemade chile is the hottest, tastest stuff on gods green earth. Only the true chile veteran should eat there, if you dont like chile or like just a little stay away. Orozco is a semi nice guy very very old, has been doing this for a very long time and he knows what he is doing, he's an east L.A. legend. |

As far as Carl's Jr. is concerned, no thanks. For me, the best thing to happen to Taco Bell was the Pizza Hut pizza's!
With a reputation like that, this place has just moved to the top of my list! And as far as the place with the line, Arturo's, that does sound like they've got something special. I can't wait to try them all. |

El Camino Real on Euclid in Fullerton is a cross between a restaurant and a fast food joint. Full range of burritos, tacos, tortas, plates, etc etc etc. Posole and Menudo on weekends. No pretensions just good food.
Anitas on Harbor in Fullerton is New Mexico Style. Most is good, sopapillas. But they make a Carne Adovada to die for (by?). For those that have never had it, it's big chunks of pork shoulder that has been marinated in red chile powder sauce and then stewed in it. Not only does it bite but you get all the subtleties of the chile mingled in. Not so hot that you can't taste anything but enough to drive the devils out. Lupitas at Colorado and Sierra Madre in Pasadena is pretty dang good. I've been there a few times and it hads been real good. only about 8 tables. Not fancy but good. Robertiros in Barstow - I can vouch for burritos only. El Cholos, Acapulcos, etc are ok but for a lot better price you can usually get a better more authentic non-yuppified meal at a lot of the neighborhood places. |

We have McDonalds, Burger King, and Jack in the box. So Carls Jr. would be a step in the right direction... I LOVE IN-OUT but that would be a sin for them to leave the state of Calif. The only good Mexican food around my parts comes from a Chevron Gas station, it is called Taco Siesta..It is 2 brothers (not black guys, real brothers.) That moved up here from Arizona. If you goto the real mexican food resturants around here you get that pre-maid and frozen then reheated sorta thing....I have to drive 2 countys north just to goto the closest fresh Tortilla shop, so I dont have to eat the crap from the grocery store.

I used to do college recruiting for a major aerospace company and I would go to Michigan Tech at Houghton, MI. If you hold your left hand in front of you palm up and pretend it is the upper peninsula, Houghton is about the middle of your thumb. 220" of snow a year (shudder). There was a restaurant in town that served Mexican and Italian food and Cornish Pasties. I always wondered what I would get if I ordered the Mexican food, but every time I chickened out and got the pasties. I can't get those easily in So. Cal.
My in-laws broke down and finally tried a small Mexican place by them in Indianapolis. Pleasantly surprised, turns out the owners came from Pasadena, CA and knew what they were doing. |

TACOS- my backyard as I cook the al pastor on the spit with my secret recipe. The Mexicans flood over here to eat them while washing them down with Modello beer. I kid you not. However, my wife is Mexican and all the others are her sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, etc. I don't provide the beer (they bring it) and they do moan and groan about that sometimes.
TAMALES- my mother-in-law's shack of a house in Leon, G.T.O., Mexico. However, don't forget your Cipro before going. I kid you not either. |

Visiting with friends from the marina I had a chance to taste test Paco's Taco's at the new location in Westchester...
Nothing I would say really popped my tastebuds but it was good food. Also, not the same amount of dust and stickiness on everything as they had at the old location. Can't wait to try the other locations next time I am around. |
